Renowned Odisha Artist Jagadish Chandra Kanungo Dies at 86 in Bhubaneswar

Renowned artist, editor and art critic Jagadish Chandra Kanungo passed away at the age of 86 at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. His death marks the loss of a prominent personality who made significant contributions to the development of Odisha’s contemporary art scene.

Kanungo played an important role in promoting and preserving contemporary painting in Odisha. He was also actively involved in promoting the state’s traditional art forms, particularly Pattachitra, while supporting the work of modern artists.

Contribution to Odisha’s Art and Culture

Jagadish Chandra Kanungo was closely associated with the promotion of art and culture in Odisha. He edited several art magazines and commemorative publications brought out by the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi.

He also served as the editor of the noted art magazine Rangarekha, which was published in 1986. Through his writings, editorial work and participation in exhibitions and seminars, Kanungo contributed to greater awareness and appreciation of both traditional and contemporary art in the state.

Awards and Recognition

Kanungo served as the former president of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi and received the prestigious Dharmapada Award for his contribution to the field of art.

His contribution was further recognised with the Ila-Bansidhar Panda Kala Samman in 2021.

As an artist, editor and art critic, Jagadish Chandra Kanungo left a lasting imprint on Odisha’s cultural and artistic landscape. His work in documenting, promoting and nurturing art is expected to remain an important part of the state’s contemporary art history.
