Belfast: Ireland scripted one of the biggest upsets in recent T20I cricket by defeating India 2-0 in the two-match series, sealing the contest with a thrilling one-run victory in the second and final game in Belfast. The defeat marked a disappointing outing for the reigning T20 world champions, who were outplayed in both matches despite entering the series as overwhelming favourites.
Having already lost the opening T20I by 34 runs, India needed a strong response to level the series. However, another inconsistent performance with both bat and ball allowed Ireland to register a memorable clean sweep on home soil.
Tector and Calitz Rescue Ireland
Asked to bat first in a rain-affected contest, Ireland recovered from an early setback to post a competitive total of 154/8.
The hosts were in trouble at 21/2, but Harry Tector anchored the innings with a composed 53, while Ben Calitz contributed a valuable 37. The pair stitched together a crucial 65-run partnership off just 44 deliveries, stabilising the innings and shifting momentum back in Ireland’s favour.
After reaching 113/4 at the end of the 15th over, Ireland accelerated in the closing stages with some timely hitting to cross the 150-run mark, setting India a challenging target under pressure.
Indian Batting Falters Again
India’s chase never found the desired rhythm as the top order collapsed for the second consecutive match.
Openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma were dismissed without scoring, putting India on the back foot almost immediately. Captain Shreyas Iyer also failed to make an impact, becoming another victim of Ireland pacer Jai Moondra, who produced an outstanding spell with the new ball.
The early wickets left India’s middle order with the responsibility of rebuilding the innings, but regular breakthroughs prevented the visitors from establishing any meaningful partnerships.
Late Fight Ends in Heartbreak
Despite the poor start, India’s lower-order batters kept the contest alive with a spirited fightback. Heading into the final two overs, the visitors required 34 runs with two wickets in hand, giving themselves a realistic chance of pulling off an unlikely victory.
However, Ireland held their nerve in the closing moments. Tight bowling and disciplined fielding ensured India could not complete the chase, eventually falling agonisingly short by just one run in one of the closest finishes seen in recent T20 internationals.
Selection Calls Under Scrutiny
India’s team selection also came under the spotlight after the series defeat. The management continued with an inexperienced batting combination despite the failures in the opening match.
The decision to keep 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on the bench throughout the series sparked discussion among fans and experts, especially as the top order struggled to provide solid starts in both matches.
While the youngster remained unused, India’s batting unit failed to deliver the consistency expected from the defending T20 world champions.
Moondra Shines for Ireland
The star of the series was undoubtedly Jai Moondra, whose match-winning spell dismantled India’s top order in the decisive game. His ability to strike at crucial moments proved decisive, earning him both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards.
Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack, backed by composed batting performances, helped the hosts secure one of the most significant bilateral series victories in their T20I history.
For India, the series serves as a timely reminder that success at the global level does not guarantee results in every contest. The back-to-back defeats have raised questions over team selection, batting consistency, and execution under pressure, areas the management will be keen to address ahead of upcoming international assignments.
