In a significant move to transform higher education and enhance student employability, the Odisha government has introduced a credit-linked internship and community service programme for undergraduate students across the state. The initiative, aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical industry experience.
The programme has already made a strong impact in its first phase, bringing more than 1.51 lakh fourth-semester undergraduate students under its ambit. By integrating internships and community engagement directly into academic curricula, the state government seeks to equip students with real-world skills, workplace exposure, and hands-on learning opportunities.
CM Mohan Majhi Launches Internship and Community Service Guidelines
The Guidelines for Internship and Community Services were officially launched by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on May 2, 2026, under the Higher Education Department. The initiative makes internships and community service activities an essential, credit-bearing component of undergraduate education.
Officials stated that the programme is designed to help students develop professional competencies, improve problem-solving abilities, and gain practical insights into various sectors before entering the workforce.
Over 86,000 Students Placed in Structured Internships
According to official data, approximately 86,500 students from the first batch have already been placed in structured internship programmes across multiple sectors.
Students are currently undergoing internships in:
- Government departments and offices
- Public sector banks
- Hospitals and healthcare institutions
- Educational institutions and schools
- Industrial units and manufacturing sectors
- Logistics and supply chain companies
- Retail businesses
- Financial and corporate organisations
These internships are expected to provide students with valuable industry exposure while helping them understand workplace dynamics and professional responsibilities.
Community Service Activities Engage Nearly 60,000 Students
Apart from internships, around 59,500 students have been engaged in community service programmes aimed at strengthening social responsibility and grassroots-level engagement.
The activities include:
- Village development initiatives
- Community surveys
- NSS programmes
- Panchayat-level projects
- NGO collaborations
- Self-Help Group (SHG) engagements
- Social awareness campaigns
Officials believe that community-based learning will help students understand societal challenges while developing leadership and communication skills.
Programme Covers 585 Higher Education Institutions
The ambitious initiative has been implemented across 585 higher education institutions throughout Odisha.
Students from diverse academic disciplines, including Arts, Science, Commerce, and Professional Courses, are participating in the programme. The state government has ensured that internship opportunities are available for students from both technical and non-technical streams.
Special Internship Opportunities for Humanities Students
One of the unique aspects of the programme is the creation of specialised internship pathways for students pursuing subjects such as Odia Literature, History, Sanskrit, and other humanities disciplines.
These students can gain practical exposure through placements in:
- Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)
- Odisha State Archaeology Department
- State Museums
- Heritage and cultural institutions
- Anganwadi centres
- Educational and research organisations
This approach ensures that students from traditional academic streams also receive career-oriented exposure and experiential learning opportunities.
Strengthening Employability Through Experiential Learning
The Odisha government’s initiative aligns closely with the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines promoting internships, research opportunities, vocational education, and skill development for undergraduate students.
Education experts believe that structured internships help students:
- Improve employability skills
- Gain industry experience
- Build professional networks
- Enhance communication and teamwork abilities
- Make informed career choices
By combining academic knowledge with practical exposure, the programme aims to create a future-ready workforce capable of meeting evolving industry demands.
A Major Step Towards Education Reform
With more than 1.51 lakh students already participating, Odisha’s internship and community service programme represents one of the largest experiential learning initiatives in the state’s higher education sector.
The government hopes that the programme will not only improve employment prospects for graduates but also encourage innovation, social responsibility, and skill-based learning among young students.
As higher education increasingly shifts towards outcome-based learning, Odisha’s model could emerge as a benchmark for integrating internships and community service into mainstream undergraduate education across India.
