The southwest monsoon has officially entered Odisha, bringing widespread rainfall to several parts of the state and providing much-needed relief from the prevailing summer heat. As rain activity intensifies, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for multiple districts, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds over the coming days.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, an Orange Warning has been issued for 13 districts due to the possibility of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Southern Odisha is expected to witness the most significant impact of the monsoon system.
Heavy Rain Likely in Southern Odisha
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Gajapati. These districts are likely to experience intense rain spells along with gusty winds, increasing the risk of waterlogging and localized disruptions.
Weather officials have also predicted wind speeds of up to 50-60 kmph in some areas, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.
Yellow Alert for Remaining Districts
Apart from the Orange Warning districts, the IMD has placed all other districts of Odisha under a Yellow Warning. Light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning activity are expected across several regions as the monsoon gradually advances further into the state.
Residents have been advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions, especially during thunderstorm activity.
Weather Alerts to Continue
The Meteorological Department has indicated that weather conditions are likely to remain active over the next few days. An Orange Warning has also been issued for five districts for June 14, while intermittent light showers may occur in some areas.
The arrival of the southwest monsoon is expected to boost agricultural activities across Odisha and improve water availability in many regions. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely due to the possibility of heavy rainfall and storm-related incidents.
