India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday clarified that all crew members aboard the vessel Liaki Freedom are safe, dismissing earlier reports that claimed Indian sailors had been killed in an attack off the coast of Oman.
According to the MEA, officials directly contacted the Master of the vessel, who confirmed that no crew member was harmed and that the circulating reports were completely false.
“We have spoken with the Master of the vessel Liaki Freedom, who has confirmed that all crew members are safe and that the reported information is false,” the MEA stated.
The clarification came after several media reports and social media posts alleged casualties involving Indian nationals on board the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker. The MEA’s Fact Check division also urged the public to remain cautious and avoid sharing unverified information related to the incident.
Jaishankar Raises Maritime Security Concerns With US
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Gulf region.
Jaishankar reiterated India’s strong concerns over maritime security and stressed that attacks on commercial vessels are unacceptable. He emphasized the need to ensure the safety of civilian shipping routes and seafarers operating in the region.
MT Settebello Incident Under Scrutiny
The diplomatic developments come in the backdrop of the recent attack on the commercial tanker MT Settebello in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel, carrying 24 Indian crew members, was reportedly targeted during ongoing tensions in the region. While 21 crew members were rescued, three Indian sailors lost their lives.
The MEA has identified the deceased sailors and is coordinating efforts to bring their mortal remains back to India. India has also lodged a strong protest through diplomatic channels and continues to monitor the security situation in the Gulf closely.
India Urges Vigilance Against Misinformation
With conflicting reports emerging from the region, the MEA has urged media organisations and social media users to verify information before sharing it. Officials stressed that misinformation during sensitive international incidents can create unnecessary panic among families and the public.
As maritime tensions continue in the Gulf region, India remains engaged with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers and safeguard commercial shipping interests.
