Odisha’s Sudarsan Pattnaik Becomes First Indian to Win Russia Grand Sand Master Cup 2026

Moscow: Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik from Odisha has created history by becoming the first Indian sand artist to receive the prestigious Russia Grand Sand Master Cup 2026 at the II International Festival of Sand Sculpture in Russia.

The prestigious honour was conferred in recognition of Pattnaik’s exceptional contribution to the art of sand sculpting and his impactful creation highlighting the urgent issue of global warming and environmental conservation.

Global Recognition for Environmental-Themed Sand Art

The award was presented during the international festival, which commenced on June 11, 2026, and brought together some of the world’s leading sand artists.

Pattnaik’s sculpture, standing approximately three metres tall, carried a strong environmental message. The artwork depicted two contrasting faces of the Earth—one representing a planet suffering from drought, environmental degradation and climate change, while the other showcased a greener future driven by tree plantation and ecological conservation.

Through the sculpture, the artist emphasized the importance of trees in:

  • Absorbing carbon dioxide
  • Releasing oxygen
  • Conserving water resources
  • Preventing soil erosion
  • Supporting biodiversity and wildlife

The powerful visual message resonated strongly with both visitors and the jury.

Award Presented at International Festival

The Grand Sand Master Cup and medal were presented to Pattnaik during the festival’s opening ceremony by Alena Aleksandrovna in the presence of government officials, dignitaries and international participants.

The festival featured 12 prominent sand sculptors from different countries, each showcasing their artistic skills through unique and creative sculptures.

According to organisers, the jury unanimously selected Pattnaik for the top honour, citing his artistic excellence, creativity and long-standing efforts to use sand art as a medium for social and environmental awareness.

Over the years, Sudarsan Pattnaik has earned international acclaim for creating thought-provoking sculptures on themes such as climate change, peace, humanitarian issues, social justice and environmental protection.
