Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) state-of-the-art greenfield Data Centre at Info Valley-II in Jatni, Khordha district, during his one-day visit to Odisha. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 169 crore, the facility is expected to strengthen India’s digital financial infrastructure and improve the security and reliability of banking services.
Spread across 18.55 acres, the new facility is the RBI’s second Data Centre after its existing centre in Navi Mumbai. It is designed to support the secure storage and management of financial information while helping maintain the continuity of critical banking services during cyberattacks and technical disruptions.
RBI Data Centre Built on 18.55 Acres in Jatni
The newly inaugurated Data Centre has been established at Info Valley-II in Jatni, in Odisha’s Khordha district. The project has been developed on 18.55 acres of land at an estimated investment of Rs 169 crore.
As the RBI’s second Data Centre, the facility represents an important addition to the infrastructure supporting India’s financial system. Its location in Odisha also strengthens the state’s role in the country’s expanding digital and technology ecosystem.
The centre is expected to support the secure handling of financial data and improve the resilience of systems that underpin banking and digital payment services.
Facility to Support UPI, NEFT and RTGS Transactions
One of the key functions of the new Data Centre will be to securely store information related to digital financial transactions carried out through major payment systems.
These include:
- Unified Payments Interface (UPI): A widely used system for instant digital payments.
- National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT): A facility for transferring money electronically between bank accounts.
- Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS): A system primarily used for high-value fund transfers, with transactions settled individually in real time.
The facility is expected to strengthen the infrastructure supporting these payment systems and contribute to the secure management of financial information.
As digital payments become increasingly important to India’s economy, reliable data infrastructure is essential for maintaining the availability and security of financial services.
Strengthening Cybersecurity and Banking Continuity
The RBI Data Centre is expected to play a role in maintaining banking services during cyberattacks, technical failures and other disruptions.
Financial institutions depend on secure and reliable digital infrastructure to process transactions and provide uninterrupted services to customers. A resilient data centre can support business continuity by helping protect information and maintain critical operations during unexpected incidents.
The new facility is also expected to contribute to the wider security of India’s digital financial ecosystem, where the protection of transaction data and the reliability of payment networks remain key priorities.
AI, Cloud Computing and Big Data Analytics to Be Used
The facility will focus on advanced technologies, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics.
These technologies can support the management, processing and analysis of large volumes of information while helping improve the efficiency of digital infrastructure.
The centre will also support cybersecurity training aimed at strengthening the skills and capabilities required to protect India’s digital financial systems.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, technological development and specialised training are important elements of efforts to safeguard banking infrastructure and maintain public confidence in digital transactions.
Elaborate Security Arrangements for PM Modi’s Odisha Visit
Extensive security arrangements were made for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Odisha.
According to the report, the Commissionerate Police deployed 57 platoons of police personnel and five platoons of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to manage security during the programme.
Traffic restrictions were also imposed in parts of Bhubaneswar to facilitate the Prime Minister’s movement and ensure the smooth conduct of the visit.
The arrangements formed part of the security preparations for the high-profile inauguration programme in Khordha district.
Boost to India’s Digital Financial Infrastructure
The inauguration of the RBI’s new Data Centre marks an important development in India’s digital financial infrastructure. With digital payment platforms such as UPI, NEFT and RTGS supporting millions of transactions, secure data storage and operational resilience are essential for the financial sector.
The new facility in Jatni is expected to contribute to the protection of financial information, continuity of banking operations and development of cybersecurity capabilities.
The project also adds to Odisha’s growing presence in the country’s technology and infrastructure landscape.
