Kalbaisakhi to Continue Across Odisha for Next 3 Days; Orange Alert Issued for 7 Districts

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to continue experiencing the impact of Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) over the next three days, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Bhubaneswar forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, rainfall, and gusty winds across several parts of the state.

The weather department has issued an Orange Alert for seven districts on Monday, warning residents about the possibility of intense thunderstorm activity accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds. The forecast indicates that unstable weather conditions will remain active across both northern and southern Odisha, while coastal regions may continue to experience hot and humid weather despite intermittent rainfall.

Orange Alert Issued for Seven Districts

The following districts have been placed under Orange Alert due to the likelihood of severe thunderstorm activity:

  • Bhadrak
  • Balasore
  • Mayurbhanj
  • Keonjhar
  • Koraput
  • Malkangiri
  • Nabarangpur

According to meteorologists, these districts may witness:

  • Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning
  • Moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated areas
  • Gusty surface winds
  • Sudden weather changes during afternoon and evening hours
  • Temporary disruption to normal activities

Residents in the affected districts have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles.

Kalbaisakhi Activity Already Affecting Several Regions

Over the past few days, the influence of Kalbaisakhi weather systems has been felt across multiple districts of Odisha.

Several coastal and interior areas witnessed:

  • Sudden thunderstorms
  • Lightning strikes
  • Strong gusty winds
  • Short-duration but intense rainfall

The weather activity brought temporary relief from the prevailing heatwave-like conditions in many places. However, high humidity levels have continued to cause discomfort, especially in coastal districts.

Yellow Warning Issued for 20 Districts on Tuesday

The Regional Meteorological Centre has also issued a Yellow Warning for 20 districts for Tuesday.

The warning indicates the possibility of:

  • Thunderstorms with lightning
  • Light to moderate rainfall
  • Gusty winds
  • Localized weather disturbances

Although the intensity may be lower than districts under the Orange Alert, residents have been advised to remain cautious and monitor weather updates regularly.

The weather department stated that thunderstorm activity could become more widespread across different parts of the state as atmospheric conditions remain favourable for Kalbaisakhi development.

Coastal Odisha to Remain Hot and Humid

Despite the likelihood of rain and thunderstorms, coastal districts are expected to continue experiencing:

  • High humidity levels
  • Warm daytime temperatures
  • Uncomfortable weather conditions
  • Sultry afternoons and evenings

Meteorologists noted that intermittent rainfall may provide temporary cooling, but humidity is likely to persist across much of the coastal belt.

Possible Impact of Kalbaisakhi

The ongoing Kalbaisakhi activity may lead to:

✅ Localized waterlogging in low-lying areas
✅ Temporary traffic disruptions
✅ Falling tree branches due to strong winds
✅ Damage to temporary structures and hoardings
✅ Power interruptions in isolated locations
✅ Reduced visibility during intense rain spells

Farmers and people engaged in outdoor activities have been advised to take necessary precautions.

Advisory Issued by Weather Department

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Regional Meteorological Centre have urged residents to:

  • Stay updated with official weather bulletins
  • Avoid open fields during thunderstorms
  • Refrain from taking shelter under trees
  • Secure loose objects and temporary structures
  • Exercise caution while travelling during adverse weather
  • Follow instructions issued by local authorities

Officials have emphasized that weather conditions during Kalbaisakhi episodes can change rapidly, making timely alerts and preparedness essential.

Outlook for the Next Three Days

The latest forecast suggests that thunderstorms, lightning, rain, and gusty winds will continue to affect various parts of Odisha over the next three days. Northern, southern, and interior districts are expected to witness the most significant weather activity, while coastal regions may experience a mix of intermittent rainfall and persistent humidity.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow weather advisories as the state continues to remain under the influence of active Kalbaisakhi conditions.
