The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) has issued Orange and Yellow weather alerts for multiple districts across the state, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, and strong gusty winds between May 30 and June 5, 2026.
The weather advisory calls for heightened vigilance, particularly in districts placed under the Orange Alert category, where severe thunderstorm activity and heavy rainfall are expected over the coming days.
Orange Alert for 22 Districts
OSDMA has advised residents in Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, and Jharsuguda to remain prepared for adverse weather conditions.
According to the forecast:
- Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely during afternoon and evening hours.
- Gusty surface winds may reach speeds of 50–80 kmph in isolated areas.
- Heavy rainfall is expected in Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur districts.
Potential Impact
Authorities have warned that the severe weather could result in:
- Damage to standing crops, plantations, and horticulture fields.
- Minor losses to banana plantations and mature paddy crops.
- Partial damage to kutcha houses and vulnerable structures.
- Uprooting of trees and flying debris from unsecured objects.
- Localised disruptions to transportation and power supply.
Yellow Alert Issued Across Several Districts
A Yellow Alert remains in force for Sonepur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Nawrangpur, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh and other districts expected to experience less intense weather activity.
These areas may witness:
- Thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places.
- Gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph.
- Intermittent rainfall activity during afternoon and evening hours.
Hot and Humid Conditions to Persist
Despite increased rainfall activity, hot and humid weather is likely to continue in several coastal districts, including:
- Balasore
- Bhadrak
- Jajpur
- Kendrapara
- Jagatsinghapur
- Cuttack
- Gajapati
- Ganjam
- Puri
- Khordha
- Nayagarh
The combination of humidity and intermittent rainfall may create uncomfortable weather conditions, particularly in low-lying coastal areas.

May 30–31 (Day 1–2):
- Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms likely in Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur.
- Strong winds and lightning activity expected across northern and western Odisha.
June 1–3 (Day 3–5):
- Thunderstorm activity expected to spread across northern, southern, and coastal districts.
- Gusty winds and moderate rainfall likely in several regions.
June 4–5 (Day 6–7):
- Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms forecast for most parts of Odisha.
- Wind speeds may range between 30–40 kmph in Yellow Alert districts.

OSDMA has urged residents to:
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning activity.
- Avoid sheltering under trees or near electric poles.
- Secure loose objects around homes and workplaces.
- Keep livestock in safe and shaded locations.
- Disconnect electrical appliances during lightning events.
- Avoid water bodies and open fields during storms.
- Follow official weather updates and local administration advisories.
The authority has also directed district administrations in Orange Alert areas to remain prepared for any emergency response requirements as pre-monsoon weather activity intensifies across the state.
