The construction of the three majestic chariots for the annual Rath Yatra has entered its crucial second phase at the historic Ratha Khala in Puri, with axle-making work now progressing after the successful completion of wheel construction for all three chariots.
As preparations gather momentum for the world-renowned festival, the traditional chariot construction yard remains abuzz with activity. Skilled Maharana servitors are working tirelessly on multiple structural components to ensure the timely completion of the sacred chariots that will carry Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra during the grand annual procession.
Wheel Construction Phase Successfully Completed
The first phase of the elaborate chariot-building process concluded with the completion of all wheels required for the three chariots. The stacking of timber at the outer Ratha Khala for the preparation of the Pancha Danda Chaupata structure has also been completed.
With this milestone achieved, focus has now shifted to the preparation of the axles, locally known as Akha. The axle-making process marks the beginning of the second phase of construction and plays a vital role in ensuring the structural stability of the giant wooden chariots.
According to traditional practices followed for centuries, every stage of construction is carried out with strict adherence to rituals, measurements and hereditary craftsmanship passed down through generations of Maharana servitors.
Pancha Danda Structure Work to Begin Soon
Following the completion of axle construction, work on the Pancha Danda framework of the three chariots will commence. This stage is considered one of the most significant parts of the chariot-building process as it forms the base structure above the wheels and axles.
During the third phase of construction, the wheels and axles will first be assembled and aligned in the prescribed ritualistic direction. The Pancha Danda framework will then be mounted carefully on the wheel-and-axle assembly in accordance with age-old traditions observed at the Ratha Khala.
Servitors are currently engaged in crafting important axle components such as Nahaka, Padi Nahaka, Bada Uchhula and Sana Uchhula for the three chariots.
Work on Taladhwaja Chariot Component Begins
Meanwhile, construction work on the Chirata of the Pola Gayala component of the Taladhwaja chariot is scheduled to begin on Friday. The Taladhwaja chariot, associated with Lord Balabhadra, is one of the three grand chariots constructed every year ahead of the Rath Yatra festival.
The ongoing work at the Ratha Khala reflects the coordinated efforts of servitors, carpenters and traditional artisans who are simultaneously handling multiple components under the supervision of temple authorities.
Preparations Intensify Ahead of Rath Yatra 2026
Every year, the construction of the chariots attracts thousands of devotees and visitors eager to witness the centuries-old craftsmanship associated with the Rath Yatra. The chariots are built anew each year using specially selected timber and traditional techniques unique to the Jagannath culture of Odisha.
As the festival approaches, the pace of work at the Ratha Khala is expected to intensify further, ensuring that all three chariots are completed on time for the grand procession in Puri.
