Several parts of Odisha are likely to experience severe heatwave conditions, warm nights and thunderstorms with lightning over the next seven days, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department.
While many districts are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activity, intense heat and humid weather conditions are likely to continue across large parts of the state.
Orange Warning Issued For Multiple Districts
The IMD has issued an Orange Warning for May 21 and 22 for the following districts:
- Balasore
- Bhadrak
- Kendrapara
- Jagatsinghpur
- Mayurbhanj
These areas are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph during afternoon and evening hours.
Yellow Warning For Several Other Districts
A Yellow Warning has also been issued for districts including:
- Cuttack
- Ganjam
- Khordha
- Puri
- Rayagada
- Koraput
These districts may experience thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds ranging between 30 and 50 kmph.
Heatwave Conditions To Persist
Alongside thunderstorm activity, heatwave conditions are expected to continue in isolated pockets of:
- Jharsuguda
- Sambalpur
- Angul
- Nayagarh
- Boudh
- Balangir
- Jajpur and adjoining districts
The weather department has also warned of warm night conditions in districts such as Sambalpur, Balangir and Sundargarh, which may lead to discomfort even during nighttime hours.
Hot And Humid Weather Likely In Coastal Odisha
Hot and humid weather conditions are expected to prevail across several coastal and western Odisha districts, including:
- Balasore
- Kendrapara
- Jagatsinghpur
- Cuttack
- Puri
- Khordha
- Ganjam
- Kalahandi
The IMD has advised residents to:
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight during peak afternoon hours
- Stay hydrated and wear light cotton clothing
- Remain indoors during thunderstorms whenever possible
- Take precautions against lightning strikes and strong winds
Authorities have urged citizens to follow official weather advisories and remain alert as fluctuating weather conditions continue across the state.
