Odisha Sizzles Under Heatwave; Yellow Alert Issued Across Western and Coastal Districts

Large parts of Odisha are reeling under intense heatwave conditions, with western districts facing extreme temperatures while coastal regions battle a combination of heat and high humidity, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Heatwave grips western Odisha

The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for several western districts, including Bolangir, Kalahandi, Boudh, Nayagarh, and Subarnapur (Sonepur), where heatwave conditions are expected to persist.

Residents in these areas are experiencing scorching daytime temperatures, raising concerns over dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses. Authorities have advised people to limit outdoor activities during peak hours and stay adequately hydrated.

Coastal districts face hot and humid discomfort

In contrast, coastal regions are witnessing oppressive weather due to high humidity combined with rising temperatures. Districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, and Gajapati are under a similar Yellow Warning for hot and humid conditions.

Meteorologists expect this discomfort to continue for at least the next four days, with little immediate relief.

Thunderstorm activity may bring temporary relief

Despite the prevailing heat, there is a possibility of isolated Kalbaisakhi (pre-monsoon thunderstorms) in some parts of the state. These sudden weather events could bring brief spells of rain and gusty winds, offering short-term respite from the heat.

Temperature outlook

The weather department has indicated that temperatures are unlikely to see any major change over the next two days. However, a slight dip of 2–3°C is expected thereafter, which may provide limited relief.

Bhubaneswar may see rain later in the day

In Bhubaneswar, partly cloudy skies are likely, with chances of rainfall during the afternoon or evening hours. While this may ease conditions temporarily, overall heat and humidity levels are expected to remain high.

Authorities continue to urge residents across Odisha to take precautions, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and stay updated with official weather advisories.
