Online travel platform Cleartrip, owned by Flipkart, has officially entered India’s train ticket booking space through a partnership with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. The move marks a significant expansion of Cleartrip’s services as it aims to tap into one of the largest travel segments in the country.
Seamless Booking Experience Across Train Categories
With the integration, users can now book train tickets directly on Cleartrip, including General and Tatkal quotas, in line with guidelines set by the Ministry of Railways. The platform is designed to offer a comprehensive booking experience with features such as real-time seat availability, fare insights, PNR status tracking, berth preferences, and secure digital payments.
The service will be available across multiple platforms, enabling users to manage their travel seamlessly in one place.
Huge Market Opportunity in India’s Rail Network
India’s railways remain one of the largest passenger transport systems globally, catering to nearly 23 million travellers daily and around 7 billion passengers annually. Additionally, over 800 million reserved passengers travel by train every year, presenting a massive opportunity for digital booking platforms.
Cleartrip sees this as more than just a volume-driven market. The company aims to differentiate itself through user experience and integrated services.
Cleartrip Aims for Mid-Single Digit Market Share
According to company executives, Cleartrip is targeting a mid-to-high single-digit share in the online train booking segment by the end of the current financial year. Train bookings are expected to contribute approximately 5–10% to the company’s overall business in the near term.
The company also plans to scale rapidly in the coming years, leveraging its technology and Flipkart’s ecosystem to attract more users.
Push Towards Unified Travel Platform
Cleartrip’s entry into rail ticketing aligns with its broader vision of building a unified, multi-modal travel platform that integrates flights, hotels, and trains. By expanding into railways, the company aims to strengthen its position in India’s evolving digital travel ecosystem.
Industry observers note that increased competition in the train booking space could lead to better user experiences, improved pricing transparency, and enhanced service quality for passengers.
