Bhubaneswar: In a significant development for Odisha’s culinary heritage, the world-famous Chhena Poda from Nayagarh is set to receive Geographical Indication (GI) tag recognition. The announcement was confirmed on Monday by Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal.
According to official sources, a formal declaration regarding the GI tag will be made during a scheduled meeting on May 28 and 29. The recognition is expected to provide legal and cultural identity to the traditional Odia sweet, which has long been associated with Nayagarh.
Push from Local Representation
The development follows efforts by Sambit Patra, Member of Parliament, who had earlier written to the Union Minister requesting steps to grant GI status to Chhena Poda. Responding to the appeal, Piyush Goyal assured that necessary measures would be taken to facilitate the process.
Long-Standing Demand Gains Momentum
Efforts to secure a GI tag for Chhena Poda have been underway for several years. In 2023, a key meeting was held under the supervision of then District Collector Rabi Sahu to discuss the proposal.
Various local organisations and stakeholders had also submitted representations supporting the demand. As part of the evaluation process, a team from Bengaluru visited Nayagarh to conduct a detailed survey related to the application.
The announcement has been met with widespread happiness among residents, who see it as a long-overdue recognition of their cultural legacy.
Economic and Cultural Significance
Chhena Poda is not just a dessert but a vital part of the local economy. Many families in Nayagarh and nearby areas depend on its preparation, packaging, and transportation for their livelihood. The sweet enjoys immense popularity across Odisha and beyond.
The GI tag is expected to enhance its market value, protect its authenticity, and provide economic benefits to traditional producers by preventing imitation products from misusing the name.
Growing Global Recognition
The announcement comes shortly after the celebration of World Chhena Poda Day on April 11, highlighting the growing global appreciation for Odisha’s beloved dessert.
With GI recognition on the horizon, Nayagarh’s Chhena Poda is poised to gain stronger national and international visibility, further cementing its place as a symbol of Odisha’s rich culinary tradition.
