Bhubaneswar: The capital city of Bhubaneswar marked its 78th Foundation Day on Monday with vibrant celebrations, official ceremonies, and enthusiastic public participation across the city. The occasion brought together public representatives, government officials, and residents in a collective tribute to the city’s rich history and growth.
Grand Celebrations at Odisha Legislative Assembly
The main event was organised in front of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, where dignitaries and citizens gathered to commemorate the historic day. Floral tributes were offered at the Foundation Day plaque, honouring the legacy of the city’s establishment.
City Decked Up for the Occasion
Bhubaneswar wore a festive look as major squares and public spaces were beautifully decorated, attracting both residents and visitors. Hundreds of people assembled at different locations to witness the celebrations and take part in the festivities.
A colourful parade, featuring enthusiastic participation from school students, added vibrancy to the event. The parade, along with a public meeting, became a highlight of the Foundation Day programme.
Dignitaries Grace the Event
Several prominent figures, including the Bhubaneswar Member of Parliament, the Speaker, and the Mayor, were present. Distinguished guests joined in paying homage to the city’s journey and achievements.
On this occasion, eminent individuals were honoured with the ‘Rajdhani Gaurav Samman’ for their notable contributions to society and the development of the capital.
Historical Importance of April 13
The Foundation Day marks April 13, 1948, when Bhubaneswar was officially designated as the capital of Odisha. The historic event was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru, making it a significant milestone in the state’s history.
Since then, Bhubaneswar has evolved into a major hub for culture, education, and commerce, often referred to as the “Temple City of India.”
Two-Day Celebration Programme
The official celebrations are being conducted over two days—April 13 and 14—at the foundation stone site near the Assembly. The programme includes cultural events, ceremonial functions, and public gatherings, reflecting the city’s heritage and modern aspirations.
The 78th Foundation Day not only celebrates Bhubaneswar’s past but also highlights its continued growth as one of India’s emerging urban centres.
