Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced web-based audio and video calling, allowing users to make and receive calls directly through their web browser without downloading the desktop application. The feature is part of a broader update aimed at enhancing cross-device connectivity and improving the overall calling experience.
According to an official WhatsApp blog post, the new feature supports both one-on-one and group voice and video calls. Users can also access familiar in-call features such as screen sharing, emoji reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab to view call history and favourite contacts.
Web Calling Without Desktop App
With the latest update, users can initiate and receive WhatsApp calls directly from supported web browsers, making it easier to stay connected on shared computers, work laptops where app installations are restricted, or any device where using a browser is more convenient.
Explaining the feature, WhatsApp said:
“Whether you’re a college student on a shared computer, using a work laptop that doesn’t allow app downloads, or simply prefer your browser, you can jump on a call without leaving the browser you’re already on.”
New Call Transfer Feature
WhatsApp has also launched a Call Transfer feature, enabling users to seamlessly move an ongoing group call between devices.
For instance, users can start a call on their smartphone and transfer it to a desktop or another compatible device without disconnecting or rejoining the conversation, ensuring uninterrupted communication across devices.
Waiting Room for Better Call Control
To strengthen privacy and improve management of group calls, WhatsApp has introduced a Waiting Room feature.
When a call link is created with the “Require Approval to Join” option enabled, participants joining through the link will first enter a virtual waiting room. The host can then review and approve each participant before allowing them to join the call, adding an extra layer of security for meetings and group conversations.
Improved Call Quality
The update also introduces two new technologies designed to enhance audio and video quality during calls.
- QuickHD enables high-definition video quality from the very beginning of a call, reducing the time users typically wait for video clarity to improve.
- Noise Suppression intelligently filters background sounds, ensuring voices remain clear even when users are calling from noisy environments such as busy streets, cafés, or public places.
WhatsApp said these new features are being rolled out gradually and will become available to users over the coming weeks.
The latest update reflects WhatsApp’s continued focus on making its communication platform more versatile, secure, and accessible across multiple devices without compromising call quality.
