Bomb Threat Email to ISRO Headquarters Triggers High-Alert Security Operation in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: A bomb threat sent via email to the headquarters of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru on Thursday triggered a major security operation, prompting an extensive search of the country’s premier space agency before authorities confirmed that the threat was a hoax.

The threatening email was reportedly addressed to the office of ISRO Chairman Dr V. Narayanan, leading officials to immediately activate emergency security protocols. Within minutes, local police, bomb disposal squads, dog squads, and other security personnel were deployed to the ISRO headquarters to ensure the safety of employees and secure the premises.

Authorities conducted a comprehensive search of the entire campus, inspecting office buildings, common areas, parking spaces, and other sensitive locations. The operation continued for several hours as officials followed standard security procedures to rule out any potential danger.

Following the detailed inspection, police confirmed that no explosive device, suspicious object, or hazardous material was found anywhere on the premises. Officials subsequently declared the bomb threat to be false, allowing normal operations at the ISRO headquarters to resume.

Although the threat was found to be a hoax, law enforcement agencies have launched a full-scale investigation to trace the origin of the email and identify the person or group responsible for sending it. Cybercrime experts are assisting investigators in examining the email’s digital trail, including its IP address, server details, and routing information.

Police are also exploring the possibility that the email may have originated from outside India. Technical teams are coordinating with relevant agencies to determine whether sophisticated methods were used to conceal the sender’s identity.

The investigation is being led by the Sanjaynagar Police Station, which is collecting digital evidence and analysing all available technical inputs. Officials have reiterated that individuals responsible for issuing false bomb threats can face stringent legal action under various provisions of the Indian law, particularly when such acts disrupt public services and create unnecessary panic.

Security experts noted that while the threat ultimately proved to be false, every bomb threat involving a critical national institution must be treated with the highest level of seriousness. Standard operating procedures require immediate evacuation or sanitisation of the affected premises until the threat is thoroughly assessed and neutralised.

The incident once again highlights the growing challenge posed by anonymous hoax emails targeting important government institutions and public facilities. In recent years, several educational institutions, airports, hospitals, and government offices across India have received similar threatening emails, resulting in large-scale security operations before being declared false alarms.

One of the most prominent such incidents occurred last year when multiple schools in Delhi, including DPS Dwarka, Krishna Model School, and Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, received bomb threat emails. Those incidents also prompted extensive searches by police and bomb disposal units before authorities confirmed that the threats were not genuine.

Investigators believe such hoax threats not only consume significant security resources but also create unnecessary fear among the public and disrupt the normal functioning of essential institutions. Authorities have therefore intensified efforts to identify and prosecute those responsible for circulating such false threats.

The latest incident at ISRO has once again underscored the importance of robust security protocols at strategic national establishments. Officials have assured that all necessary precautions were taken promptly and that there was no risk to employees or infrastructure during the operation.

The investigation remains underway as police continue to trace the source of the email and determine the motive behind the false bomb threat.
