In a significant achievement for Indian higher education and research, 67 faculty members from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela have secured a place in the prestigious SciRank Global World’s Top 5% Scientists List. The recognition highlights the institute’s growing global research footprint and reinforces its position as one of India’s leading centres for scientific innovation and academic excellence.
Published annually by the Global Institute of Scientometrics, the SciRank World’s Top 5% Scientists List identifies researchers who have made exceptional contributions to their respective fields through high-impact scientific work and scholarly publications.
Global Recognition Based on Scientific Impact
The latest edition of the ranking evaluated more than 10 million active researcher profiles and nearly 50 million scholarly publications from across the world. Unlike many global rankings that rely on surveys, nominations, or editorial assessments, SciRank uses field-normalised bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex, the world’s largest open-access research database.
This data-driven methodology ensures transparency, objectivity, and freedom from institutional bias, making the recognition particularly significant for researchers and institutions alike.
NIT Rourkela Director Congratulates Faculty
Congratulating the faculty members on the achievement, NIT Rourkela Director Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao said the recognition reflects the institute’s strong research ecosystem and commitment to knowledge creation.
He noted that the inclusion of 67 faculty members among the world’s leading scientists demonstrates the institute’s emphasis on research excellence, innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and solving real-world challenges through science and technology.
According to him, the achievement is a matter of immense pride for the entire NIT Rourkela community and showcases the global impact of research being conducted at the institute.
Chemistry Department Leads the List
Among all departments, the Department of Chemistry recorded the highest number of faculty members featured in the ranking. It was followed by the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Life Science, and Electronics and Communication Engineering.
The recognition reflects the institute’s research strength across both traditional engineering disciplines and emerging scientific domains.
