DRDO Successfully Tests Ballistic Missile Defence System, Naval Anti-Ship Missile

In a major boost to India’s defence preparedness, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully demonstrated several advanced indigenous technologies designed to counter evolving aerial and maritime threats, including long-range ballistic missiles and hostile naval targets.

The successful trials, conducted on June 10 and 11, 2026, showcased India’s growing capabilities in missile defence, maritime warfare, and indigenous defence technology development. The achievement further strengthens India’s position among a select group of countries with advanced missile interception and strategic defence systems.

Three Successful Ballistic Missile Defence Tests

DRDO carried out three consecutive flight tests as part of the country’s multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) programme. During the trials, interceptor missiles successfully tracked, engaged and destroyed designated targets, validating the effectiveness of India’s layered missile shield.

According to officials, the tests demonstrated the ability of the BMD architecture to detect, track and neutralise incoming ballistic missile threats using advanced radar systems, command-and-control networks, and interceptor technologies.

The successful validation reinforces India’s capability to defend critical assets and population centres against a wide spectrum of missile threats.

India Joins Elite League Of Nations

With the latest successful demonstrations, India has further consolidated its position among a handful of nations possessing operational-level Ballistic Missile Defence capabilities.

The advanced defence shield is designed to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles at various stages of flight, including threats ranging from short-range missiles to potentially Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM)-class targets.

The achievement is considered a significant milestone in strengthening India’s strategic deterrence and national security framework amid evolving global security challenges.

Maiden Flight Test Of Naval Anti-Ship Missile Successful

Apart from the missile defence trials, DRDO also successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR).

The new missile system is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Armed Forces’ ability to engage and neutralise hostile naval assets at medium ranges. The successful test marks a major advancement in India’s indigenous maritime strike capabilities and strengthens the country’s naval warfare preparedness.

Defence experts view the NASM-MR as a crucial addition to India’s growing arsenal of domestically developed precision-guided weapons.

Senior Officials Monitor Trials

The flight tests were witnessed by senior officials from DRDO and the Armed Forces. Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO, closely monitored the trials and congratulated the teams involved in the successful execution of the programme.

He praised the coordinated efforts of scientists, engineers, military personnel, and industry partners who contributed to the development and testing of these advanced defence systems.

Rajnath Singh Congratulates DRDO

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded DRDO for the successful demonstrations, describing them as a significant achievement for India’s defence sector.

He said the successful tests would strengthen India’s national security architecture while advancing the country’s goal of achieving self-reliance in critical defence technologies under the broader vision of indigenous defence manufacturing.

Boost To Aatmanirbhar Bharat In Defence

DRDO stated that the systems tested were developed using cutting-edge indigenous technologies designed to address both current and future threat scenarios across land, sea and air domains.

The successful demonstrations highlight India’s growing capability to design, develop and deploy advanced defence systems domestically, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers while enhancing operational readiness.

The latest achievement follows DRDO’s earlier successful Phase-II Ballistic Missile Defence System test, where an incoming target missile launched from LC-IV, Dhamra, Odisha, was detected and intercepted by the country’s advanced air defence interceptor system.

As India continues investing in next-generation defence technologies, the successful BMD and NASM-MR tests represent another major milestone in the nation’s journey toward becoming a global leader in indigenous defence innovation.
