Bhubaneswar: Odisha is bracing for another spell of widespread rainfall as a low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal continues to influence the state’s weather conditions.
Several districts are likely to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds, prompting the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Bhubaneswar, to issue an orange warning for three districts and a yellow warning for 21 others.
For Friday, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Koraput have been placed under an orange warning due to the possibility of heavy rainfall. In view of the weather conditions, educational institutions in Kalahandi have been ordered to remain closed today as a precautionary measure.
Orange Alert for Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Koraput
The three districts under the orange warning could experience intense spells of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
According to RMC Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty, moderate rain is expected across several parts of Odisha, while some areas could witness heavier showers along with lightning, thunder and gusty winds.
The weather system is expected to have a particularly noticeable impact on southern Odisha, where several districts remain vulnerable to heavy rainfall.
Heavy Rain Likely in Southern and Western Odisha
Besides the three districts under the orange warning, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Rayagada, Gajapati, Bolangir, Nuapada and Malkangiri are also expected to receive heavy rainfall.
Koraput, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi could experience heavy rain accompanied by lightning, thunder and winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph.
Other southern and western districts, including Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Bolangir and Nuapada, are also likely to receive heavy showers with thunderstorms.
Light to Moderate Rain in Several Other Districts
The weather conditions will not be limited to southern Odisha. Several other districts may also experience rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Sonepur and Boudh are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by lightning, thunder and winds reaching around 30 to 40 kmph.
The meteorological centre has advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms, particularly in areas where strong winds and lightning are forecast.
Kalahandi Schools to Remain Closed
With the possibility of heavy rainfall in Kalahandi, educational institutions in the district will remain closed today.
The precautionary measure has been taken in view of the weather warning and the possibility of disruption caused by heavy rain and associated adverse conditions.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the low-pressure system continues to influence rainfall activity over Odisha.
Sea to Remain Rough for Next 48 Hours
The weather system has also prompted a warning for marine conditions along the Odisha coast.
The sea is expected to remain rough for the next 48 hours, and the Meteorological Centre has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during this period.
The warning is aimed at preventing accidents at sea as the weather system generates unsettled marine conditions.
Rainfall May Ease Slightly, But Southern Odisha Remains Under Watch
Although overall rainfall activity across Odisha is expected to decrease somewhat during the day, southern Odisha is likely to continue experiencing heavy rainfall under the influence of the low-pressure system.
Residents in the affected districts have been advised to remain alert, particularly during periods of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
