Digha Jagannath Temple Row Ends as West Bengal Drops ‘Dham’; Odisha Welcomes Move

A major controversy surrounding the naming of the Jagannath temple project in Digha appears to have been resolved after the West Bengal government decided to remove the word “Dham” from the shrine’s official nomenclature. The decision has been widely welcomed across Odisha, with political leaders, temple administrators, religious scholars and devotees describing it as a respectful acknowledgment of the deep spiritual significance associated with the historic Jagannath Temple in Puri.

The issue had sparked strong reactions in Odisha over the past several months after the Digha temple project was referred to as “Jagannath Dham.” Many devotees and religious organizations argued that the term “Dham” carries a unique religious identity that has traditionally been associated with the centuries-old Jagannath Temple in Puri, one of Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimage destinations and one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites.

Following repeated objections and appeals from Odisha, the West Bengal government announced that the Digha shrine would no longer use the word “Dham” and would instead be known simply as the Shri Jagannath Temple, Digha.

Odisha Government Welcomes Decision

Reacting to the development, Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan expressed gratitude to the West Bengal government for acting promptly on the concerns raised by devotees and stakeholders from Odisha.

He stated that the request to remove the word “Dham” had been made in the interest of preserving the traditional and spiritual identity associated with Lord Jagannath’s sacred abode in Puri. According to him, the swift response from the neighbouring state reflects respect for the sentiments of millions of Jagannath devotees across the country.

The minister noted that the decision has brought satisfaction to devotees who had been expressing concerns over the use of terminology that they believed was intrinsically linked to the Puri shrine.

BJP Leaders Say Devotees’ Sentiments Respected

Odisha BJP President Manmohan Samal also welcomed the move, describing it as a victory for the faith and emotions of Jagannath devotees.

Samal said the matter had been repeatedly raised in public forums and through official communications in the past. He added that devotees considered the issue sensitive because of the religious and cultural importance attached to the term “Jagannath Dham.”

According to him, the latest decision has removed confusion and helped protect the sanctity of traditions associated with Lord Jagannath. He further remarked that the move has been positively received by people across Odisha who have long maintained a strong emotional connection with the Puri temple.

SJTA Appreciates Positive Resolution

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) also praised the decision and expressed hope that it would strengthen mutual respect for religious traditions.

SJTA Chief Administrator Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee said devotees across India would appreciate the step taken by the West Bengal government. He emphasized that rituals, customs and traditions linked to Lord Jagannath have evolved over centuries and should be preserved with due reverence.

Padhee added that respecting established traditions helps maintain the spiritual heritage of Lord Jagannath and promotes harmony among devotees irrespective of regional boundaries.

Digha Temple Authorities Support Name Change

The authorities associated with the Digha Jagannath Temple project also welcomed the revised nomenclature.

Head priest Radha Mohan Das said the concerns raised by Odisha were placed before the West Bengal government and were carefully considered. He noted that the Chief Minister accepted the request and decided that the shrine would officially be known as Shri Jagannath Temple instead of Jagannath Dham.

According to temple representatives, the decision reflects sensitivity towards the religious sentiments of devotees and is expected to foster greater goodwill between the two states.

Why The Term ‘Dham’ Became Controversial

The debate centered on the belief among many devotees that the word “Dham” holds a special spiritual significance due to its historic association with the Jagannath Temple in Puri. Religious scholars and temple servitors argued that the designation is deeply embedded in centuries-old traditions and forms an integral part of the shrine’s identity.

Several religious bodies, cultural organizations and public representatives in Odisha had urged authorities to avoid using the same terminology for other temple projects to prevent confusion among pilgrims and preserve the distinct heritage of the Puri shrine.

The issue gained considerable public attention, leading to discussions at political, administrative and religious levels before the matter was finally resolved.

Focus Returns To Jagannath Culture And Spiritual Heritage

With the nomenclature dispute now settled, religious leaders and devotees hope the focus will shift toward promoting the teachings, culture and spiritual legacy of Lord Jagannath.

Observers believe the decision will help strengthen cultural ties between Odisha and West Bengal while ensuring respect for long-established traditions associated with one of India’s most revered deities.

The resolution of the controversy has been viewed as a positive step toward preserving religious harmony and honoring the sentiments of millions of devotees who regard Puri as the original and sacred abode of Lord Jagannath.
