Puri continues to host the second technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Working Group, bringing together delegates from 11 countries to discuss strategies for strengthening disaster preparedness, resilience and risk reduction. The three-day conference has emerged as a significant international platform for sharing knowledge and best practices in disaster management among BRICS nations and partner countries.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to formally inaugurate the second day of the conference on Thursday. The event is being held under India’s BRICS Presidency and focuses on enhancing cooperation in tackling natural disasters, climate-related risks and emergency response challenges.
Focus on Disaster Preparedness and Resilience
The opening day witnessed extensive deliberations on key aspects of disaster risk management. Delegates discussed community-based disaster risk reduction, disaster financing mechanisms, prevention strategies, capacity building and technological interventions that can strengthen preparedness and response systems.
Experts from participating countries exchanged experiences and explored collaborative approaches to mitigate the growing impact of natural disasters, which have become increasingly frequent and intense due to climate change and environmental challenges.
Odisha to Showcase Disaster Management Model
A major highlight of the conference is Odisha’s opportunity to present its globally recognised disaster management framework. The state, known for its effective cyclone preparedness and evacuation strategies, will share its experiences in minimizing disaster-related losses and achieving near-zero casualty targets during major natural calamities.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) are scheduled to present detailed reports during the conference. These presentations will focus on disaster mitigation measures, early warning systems, community participation and best practices adopted in managing cyclones, floods and other emergencies.
International Collaboration at the Forefront
The technical meeting forms part of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group’s broader efforts to strengthen international cooperation in disaster management. Representatives from 11 participating countries are taking part in discussions aimed at developing coordinated approaches to disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
The conference will continue with additional technical sessions and expert discussions over the next two days, focusing on innovative solutions and collaborative frameworks for building more resilient and disaster-ready societies.
For Odisha, hosting the BRICS-level meeting reinforces its growing reputation as a leader in disaster management and highlights the state’s preparedness to host major international events.
