IMD Issues Orange, Yellow Alerts Across Odisha Amid Thunderstorm And Heavy Rain Warning

The India Meteorological Department has issued multiple orange and yellow weather alerts across Odisha for the coming week, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and heavy rainfall in several districts.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert and take precautionary measures as unstable weather conditions are expected to continue till June 4.

Day 1 Forecast (Till 0830 IST, May 29)

Light to moderate rainfall is likely at a few places in northern and southern Odisha.

Orange Alert Districts

An orange alert has been issued for:

  • Sundargarh
  • Jharsuguda
  • Sambalpur
  • Deogarh
  • Angul
  • Keonjhar
  • Mayurbhanj

These districts may witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 50–60 kmph during afternoon and evening hours. Heavy rainfall is also likely in Keonjhar district.

Yellow Alert Districts

Yellow warnings have been issued for:

  • Balasore
  • Bhadrak
  • Jajpur
  • Kendrapara
  • Jagatsinghapur
  • Cuttack

Several southern districts are also likely to experience thunderstorms with winds of 40–50 kmph and hot, humid conditions.

Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are expected across Odisha.

Orange alerts have been issued for:

  • Deogarh
  • Angul
  • Dhenkanal
  • Keonjhar
  • Mayurbhanj
  • Sundargarh
  • Jharsuguda
  • Sambalpur

These districts may witness thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

Yellow warnings continue across coastal, central and southern Odisha for lightning, gusty winds and humid weather conditions.

Day 4 Forecast (May 31–June 1)

Orange alerts have been sounded for:

  • Gajapati
  • Ganjam

These districts may experience localized thunderstorms with strong winds.

Yellow alerts remain in force for several other districts.

Day 5–7 Forecast (June 1–4)

Light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are likely across coastal and southern Odisha.

Yellow alerts will continue in multiple northern, western and southern districts, with gusty winds of 40–50 kmph and hot, humid conditions expected at isolated places.

IMD Advisory

The IMD has urged residents in orange alert districts to remain prepared for possible disruptions caused by thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall.

People have been advised to:

  • Avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning
  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms
  • Secure loose outdoor objects
  • Protect standing crops and plantations
  • Stay hydrated during humid weather conditions

Authorities are also monitoring the situation closely as pre-monsoon weather activity intensifies across the state.
