Speculation surrounding the future of MS Dhoni intensified after the legendary cricketer hinted at his physical struggles following Chennai Super Kings’ final home game of IPL 2026 at Chepauk.
Although Dhoni did not make any formal retirement announcement, his comments after CSK’s five-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad carried emotional weight for fans who have been waiting to see him return to action.
Dhoni missed the entire IPL 2026 season because of a calf injury and was unable to feature in a single match. Despite his absence from the playing XI, he joined the CSK squad during the traditional lap of honour at Chepauk after the match, creating an emotional atmosphere inside the stadium.
Raina Reveals Emotional Conversation With Dhoni
Former CSK star Suresh Raina later revealed a heartfelt conversation he had with Dhoni during the lap of honour.
Speaking on Star Sports, Raina said he urged Dhoni to return for another IPL season because IPL 2026 could not be considered a proper farewell as he had not played any matches.
“I told him, ‘You have given IPL 2026 a missed call. It won’t count. You have to come back next year,’” Raina said.
According to Raina, Dhoni responded by saying, “Nahi yaar, body thoda waisa hai (my body is a little weak).”
The statement has since sparked widespread discussion among cricket fans, with many viewing it as Dhoni’s clearest indication yet that his playing career could be nearing its end.
“Let Me See” Keeps Fans Hopeful
Despite the emotional tone of the conversation, Raina revealed that Dhoni did not completely rule out a return.
“Fans also want you to come. He said ‘let me see’. If he says let me see, there’s a chance he will work hard and play again,” Raina added.
The phrase has given CSK supporters a glimmer of hope, even as uncertainty continues around the veteran cricketer’s future.
Injury-Plagued Season For CSK
IPL 2026 proved to be a difficult campaign for CSK, with injuries, inconsistent performances and transition concerns affecting the team throughout the season.
Dhoni’s prolonged absence due to the calf injury became one of the biggest talking points of the tournament. Earlier in the season, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had indicated that Dhoni was eager to return, but careful management of the injury was necessary to avoid aggravating the condition.
However, the comeback never materialised, and Dhoni’s presence remained limited to the dugout and team activities.
Emotional Night At Chepauk
By the time CSK returned to Chepauk for their final home game, the atmosphere already carried the feeling of a farewell.
Fans who had waited all season to watch Dhoni play once more in the iconic yellow jersey instead witnessed him slowly walking around the stadium during the lap of honour, acknowledging supporters without making any definitive announcement.
For many CSK fans, the emotional moment symbolised the possible end of an era that has defined the franchise for nearly two decades.
