Unseasonal storm activity continues to affect Odisha, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a fresh weather alert warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall across several parts of the state today.
The weather office has cautioned residents to remain alert as intense storm conditions may disrupt normal life in multiple districts over the next few days.
Orange Warning Issued for Three Districts
According to the IMD, Jajpur, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts have been placed under an Orange Warning, indicating the likelihood of severe weather conditions.
These areas may witness:
- Heavy rainfall
- Thunderstorms with lightning
- Possibility of hailstorms
Authorities have advised residents in these districts to take necessary precautions and avoid open areas during thunderstorms.
Strong Winds Expected During Storms
The weather department has also predicted strong gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph during the storm activity.
Such wind speeds may cause damage to weak structures, trees, and crops, while also affecting transportation and outdoor activities.
Yellow Warning for Remaining Districts
For the remaining 27 districts of Odisha, the IMD has issued a Yellow Warning, which indicates the possibility of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Although less severe than the orange alert, residents in these areas are still advised to stay cautious, particularly during evening and night hours when thunderstorm activity tends to intensify.
Weather Alert to Continue Tomorrow
The unstable weather pattern is expected to persist. The IMD has already placed 15 districts under a Yellow Warning for April 9, suggesting that thunderstorm activity may continue into the next day.
Meteorologists attribute the unseasonal weather conditions to atmospheric instability and moisture intrusion, which are currently influencing weather systems across eastern India.
Advisory for Residents
Authorities have urged people to follow basic safety measures during thunderstorms, including:
- Avoid standing under trees or electric poles
- Stay indoors during lightning activity
- Secure loose objects that may be blown away by strong winds
- Farmers are advised to protect harvested crops and livestock
Officials continue to monitor the situation and will issue further updates if weather conditions intensify.
