Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens and businesses not to panic amid reports of a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders in several Indian cities, assuring that the government is taking active steps to stabilise supplies affected by the ongoing global energy crisis.
Shortages of commercial cooking gas cylinders have been reported from major urban centres including Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai and Chennai. Restaurants, caterers and institutional kitchens that depend heavily on LPG have reported difficulties in procuring cylinders due to disruptions in supply chains.
PM Modi Accuses Opposition of Creating Panic
Addressing the issue during the NXT Summit, the Prime Minister said that some groups were attempting to create unnecessary panic around the LPG situation.
“There’s a lot of discussion these days about LPG. Some people are trying to create panic and pursue their own agenda. I don’t want to comment on them politically at this time. But by doing so, they are exposing themselves to the public and causing harm to the country,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the current crisis is part of a wider global challenge linked to geopolitical tensions and disruptions in international energy markets.
“No country is untouched by the impact of this global crisis caused by war. To a greater or lesser extent, everyone is affected. India is also leaving no stone unturned to address this crisis,” he added.
Global Crisis Affecting Energy Supply Chains
The government has acknowledged that disruptions in global fuel supplies—partly driven by the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States—have created volatility in energy markets and supply chains worldwide.
According to the Prime Minister, India is working closely with international partners to overcome obstacles affecting fuel shipments and stabilise the availability of cooking gas.
He said he had recently discussed the issue with several world leaders as part of efforts to ensure stable energy supplies.
Push for Energy Diversification and Self-Reliance
Highlighting the country’s long-term strategy for energy security, Modi stressed the need for diversifying energy sources and strengthening domestic capabilities.
“Promoting multiple energy sources has been essential for India’s rapid development. We have worked on two levels—expanding energy infrastructure to improve access and ensuring that we do not rely solely on foreign sources for our energy needs,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that the government is focusing on self-reliance in the energy sector while simultaneously expanding supply networks across the country.
Restaurants and Caterers Feeling the Impact
Meanwhile, several food establishments across major cities have reported operational challenges due to the limited availability of commercial LPG cylinders. Some restaurants and catering businesses have said they may need to reduce operations or temporarily switch to alternative cooking arrangements if the situation continues.
Authorities, however, maintain that efforts are underway to stabilise the supply chain and ensure adequate availability of cooking gas nationwide.
