Despite a crushing defeat to South Africa in their opening Super 8 Group 1 fixture, India roared back in emphatic fashion, thrashing Zimbabwe by 72 runs in a must-win T20 World Cup 2026 encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.
Defending a mammoth target of 257, India restricted Zimbabwe to 184/6 in 20 overs, registering a commanding victory that significantly boosted their semifinal prospects.
Batting Blitz Powers India to Record 256/4
After being put into bat, India delivered a batting masterclass, piling up a record-breaking 256/4 — their highest total in T20 World Cup history.
Abhishek Sharma set the tone with a fluent 55, while Hardik Pandya added momentum with a brisk 50. At the top, Sanju Samson chipped in with a quick 24 before falling to Blessing Muzarabani.
Promotional changes in the batting order paid rich dividends. Ishan Kishan, slotted at No. 3, hammered 38 off 24 balls. Captain Suryakumar Yadav produced a trademark cameo, smashing 33 from just 13 deliveries.
The late flourish came from Tilak Varma, who unleashed a stunning 44 off only 16 balls, propelling India to a staggering total that featured 34 boundaries — 17 fours and 17 sixes.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggled throughout the innings. Tinotenda Maposa conceded 40 runs in just two overs, while Brad Evans leaked 52 in his four-over spell. Although Blessing Muzarabani briefly lifted spirits by dismissing Samson, he too proved expensive, finishing with figures of 0/43.
Bennett’s Lone Fight in Vain
In response, Zimbabwe never truly threatened the target. Brian Bennett played a valiant knock of 97 from 59 balls, showcasing resilience and power-hitting. However, he found little support from the other end as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Arshdeep Singh emerged as India’s standout bowler, claiming three wickets for just 24 runs, effectively derailing Zimbabwe’s chase.
Despite Bennett’s near-century, Zimbabwe were eventually limited to 184/6, falling well short of the imposing target.
Semifinal Race Intensifies
The comprehensive win has revitalised India’s campaign in Super 8 Group 1, keeping their semifinal aspirations firmly alive. With one more crucial fixture remaining, the team will look to carry forward the momentum and maintain their net run rate advantage.
After a disappointing start to the Super 8 stage, India’s dominant display in Chennai has sent a strong message to the rest of the competition.
