In one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 T20 World Cup, Zimbabwe produced a stunning all-round performance to defeat Australia by 23 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday. The shock result has significantly tightened the race for Super 8 qualification in Group B and revived Zimbabwe’s reputation as a dangerous giant-killer on the global stage.
Defending a competitive total of 169, Zimbabwe bowled out the star-heavy Australian lineup for 146, sealing a memorable victory that will rank among their finest in world tournament history. It also marks their first win over Australia in a major global competition in nearly two decades.
Bennett Anchors Zimbabwe With Unbeaten Knock
After being sent in to bat by stand-in Australian captain Travis Head, Zimbabwe built their innings on a strong opening foundation. Opener Brian Bennett delivered a career-best performance, carrying his bat through the innings with a composed unbeaten 64 off 56 balls.
He received steady support from Tadiwanashe Marumani and Ryan Burl, who both scored fluent 35s to maintain scoring momentum through the middle overs. Zimbabwe accelerated late despite difficult, humid conditions.
Captain Sikandar Raza, battling visible leg cramps, added crucial late runs with an explosive 25 off just 13 deliveries. He capped the innings with a towering six off Nathan Ellis, pushing the total to 169/2 and giving Zimbabwe a defendable score.
Early Collapse Derails Australia’s Chase
Australia’s chase never found stability as Zimbabwe’s pace attack struck repeatedly in the powerplay. The batting order collapsed to 29/4 inside five overs, putting them immediately on the back foot.
Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani removed Josh Inglis early, while Brad Evans dismissed both Cameron Green and Head to deepen the crisis. Power-hitter Tim David fell for a duck, further denting the chase.
A middle-order fightback from Glenn Maxwell (31) and Matt Renshaw (63) briefly revived hopes, with Renshaw registering a fighting half-century. However, Burl broke the stand by dismissing Maxwell, swinging momentum back toward Zimbabwe.
Muzarabani Seals Historic Win
The decisive blows came in the closing overs when Muzarabani returned to remove the well-set Renshaw and then dismissed Adam Zampa to claim his 100th T20I wicket — a personal milestone achieved on a landmark night for his team. He finished with outstanding figures of 4/17.
Australia’s final wicket fell when Matthew Kuhnemann was run out with 24 needed off just four balls, ending the chase and triggering celebrations in the Zimbabwe camp.
Group Standings Take A Hit
The defeat drops Australia to third place in Group B and complicates their path to the Super 8 stage. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, have strengthened their qualification chances and sent a strong message that their earlier win over Oman was no coincidence.
