Manja Thread Injuries During Makar Sankranti Spark Safety Concerns Across Odisha

Odisha has witnessed a worrying surge in injuries linked to the use of manja (Chinese kite) thread during Makar Sankranti celebrations, triggering renewed concerns over public safety and the enforcement of existing bans on the hazardous material. Despite repeated warnings and legal restrictions, multiple incidents were reported from different parts of the State on Wednesday, leaving more than 15 people injured.

Following an earlier incident in Pokhariput area of Bhubaneswar, similar cases emerged from Balasore and Dhenkanal, underscoring the continued misuse of manja thread during kite-flying festivities.

Serious Injuries Reported in Balasore and Dhenkanal

In Balasore, a man sustained serious injuries to his neck after coming into contact with manja thread while travelling on a vehicle. The injured has been identified as Bhagirathi Behera, who had gone to Bhogarai with acquaintances. According to reports, a kite flown by a young boy snapped mid-air, and the manja thread drifted onto the road, striking Behera.

He reportedly felt a sudden burning sensation on his neck and later discovered deep cuts. In an attempt to free himself, he also injured his hand. His companions rushed him to Balasore District Headquarters Hospital, where he received immediate treatment. Doctors confirmed that his injuries were not critical, and he was discharged after medical care. However, locals pointed out that the incident could have turned fatal had his vehicle been moving at a higher speed.

Another incident was reported from Fakir Mohan College Square in Balasore, where a person sustained injuries to his hands due to manja thread. Officials said at least five injury cases were recorded in Balasore alone during the festival.

Meanwhile, in Dhenkanal town, a youth suffered deep injuries to his nose and fingers after being struck by kite manja while passing through a public area. The injured was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, further adding to the growing list of festival-related accidents.

Illegal Sale of Manja Thread Under Scanner

Authorities expressed concern that despite a clear ban on the sale and use of Chinese manja thread, the material continues to be sold illegally and discreetly across markets. The sharp edges and glass-coated texture of the thread pose a severe threat to pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, cyclists, and even birds.

In response, Bhubaneswar Police conducted raids at several shops in the Unit-1 market area to curb the illegal sale of manja thread. Police officials reiterated that strict action would be taken against violators.

Police Issue Strong Legal Warning

Police have issued a stern warning stating that if kite flying using manja thread results in serious injury or death, the act will be treated as culpable homicide. Legal action will be initiated not only against the person flying the kite but also against those involved in selling the banned thread.

To strengthen enforcement, Bhubaneswar Police have formed a special team to identify, track, and arrest individuals using or selling manja thread. Similar precautionary and enforcement measures are being adopted in other districts across Odisha.

Public Urged to Celebrate Responsibly

Officials have appealed to the public to celebrate Makar Sankranti responsibly by avoiding hazardous kite-flying materials and adhering to safety guidelines. Social activists and residents have also demanded stricter monitoring and stronger penalties to prevent further injuries.

As Odisha celebrates its cultural festivals with enthusiasm, the recent incidents serve as a reminder that safety must not be compromised, and collective responsibility is essential to prevent avoidable accidents.
