Cold Wave Tightens Grip Across Odisha, Chill to Persist Till January 17

Cold conditions have intensified across Odisha, with large parts of the State witnessing a sharp fall in minimum temperatures over the past few days. According to the Meteorological Department, the prevailing cold wave situation is expected to continue for at least another two days, while overall weather conditions are likely to remain unchanged till January 17.

One of the coldest locations in the State, G. Udayagiri in Kandhamal district, recorded a minimum temperature of 3.7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, highlighting the severity of the cold spell. Officials noted that the region has been experiencing a steady decline in night temperatures for nearly two weeks. Although temperatures had fluctuated earlier, the chill has intensified significantly in recent days, pushing normal life out of gear.

Fog Forecast for 13 Districts

The Meteorological Department has also issued a forecast for light to moderate fog in 13 districts over the next three days. Dense fog during early morning hours is expected to further compound difficulties for commuters, particularly in interior and hilly areas. Weather experts have indicated that no major change in the prevailing cold conditions is likely until January 17, suggesting continued cold nights and chilly mornings across Odisha.

Koida Records Severe Nighttime Chill

Apart from Kandhamal, Koida has also been hit by severe cold, with the minimum temperature dipping below 8 degrees Celsius during nighttime. Residents of the region have reported extreme discomfort, especially during early mornings and late evenings, when temperatures drop sharply.

Daily Life Affected Across Regions

The biting cold has significantly disrupted daily life in several parts of the State. With temperatures plunging soon after sunset, roads and marketplaces are reportedly emptying earlier than usual. People are frequently seen gathering around open fires for warmth, particularly in rural, forested, and hilly areas where the cold is more intense.

The prolonged cold spell has increased hardship for vulnerable sections of society, including daily wage workers, elderly people, and children. Health officials have advised citizens to take necessary precautions, avoid exposure to cold during late night and early morning hours, and ensure adequate warmth to prevent cold-related illnesses.

As Odisha continues to reel under this intense winter spell, residents are bracing for a few more days of biting cold, foggy mornings, and chilly nights, with relief expected only after mid-January.
