In a major reform aimed at strengthening the integrity of national-level entrance examinations, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that facial recognition-based identity verification will be introduced for NEET and JEE examinations beginning in 2026. The decision follows the successful implementation of Aadhaar-based facial authentication during a pilot run at select centers during NEET 2025 in Delhi.
Officials said the pilot project showed encouraging results, with improved accuracy in candidate identification and smoother verification processes at exam centers. Based on these outcomes, the NTA has decided to expand the technology across the country for high-stakes examinations that attract millions of candidates each year.
How the New Verification System Will Work
Under the new mechanism, candidates will undergo real-time facial verification upon entry into the examination center. A live photograph of the candidate will be captured and instantly matched with the photograph stored in official databases, such as Aadhaar-linked records or other authorized identity repositories. This ensures that the person appearing for the examination is the same individual who registered for it.
The facial recognition system will operate in tandem with existing verification procedures, including physical admit card checks and document verification. Officials clarified that the new technology is meant to act as an additional security layer, not a replacement for current processes.
Curbing Malpractice and Impersonation
Impersonation and fraudulent entry have been persistent challenges in large-scale competitive exams. The NTA believes that the introduction of facial recognition will significantly reduce such malpractices by making identity fraud far more difficult. Automated verification also minimizes dependence on manual checks, reducing the scope for human error or manipulation.
According to sources, the system will be designed to ensure quick verification so that examination schedules are not disrupted. Adequate infrastructure and trained personnel will be deployed at exam centers to manage the technology efficiently.
Nationwide Implementation From 2026
Following the positive feedback from the NEET 2025 pilot, the NTA plans to implement the facial recognition system nationwide for NEET and JEE starting in 2026. Officials indicated that similar technology could later be extended to other major entrance examinations conducted by the agency.
The move aligns with the government’s broader push towards digital governance and the use of technology to enhance transparency and accountability in public systems.
