Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday began a significant three-nation diplomatic tour covering Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman, aimed at strengthening India’s bilateral relations and expanding cooperation with key partners in West Asia and Africa. The multi-country visit reflects India’s growing diplomatic outreach and strategic engagement with regions critical to trade, energy security, and global governance.
Jordan Visit Marks 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations
The first leg of the Prime Minister’s tour takes him to Jordan from December 15 to 16, following an invitation from King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein. The visit holds special significance as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Jordan.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold high-level talks with King Abdullah II, reviewing the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, including political cooperation, defence, trade, investment, education, and cultural exchanges. Discussions are also expected to cover key regional and global developments, particularly the evolving situation in West Asia.
In addition to official engagements, the Prime Minister will interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Jordan, acknowledging their contribution to strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations. The visit is expected to inject renewed momentum into India-Jordan relations at a milestone moment.
First-Ever Visit to Ethiopia Strengthens Africa Outreach
In the second leg, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Ethiopia from December 16 to 17, marking his first official visit to the African nation. He will hold extensive discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to explore avenues for deeper cooperation in areas such as trade, capacity building, agriculture, technology, health, and infrastructure development.
Addis Ababa holds particular diplomatic importance as it hosts the headquarters of the African Union (AU). The visit gains added significance following the African Union’s admission as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s G20 presidency, highlighting India’s commitment to amplifying Africa’s voice in global decision-making.
During his stay, PM Modi will address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, underscoring the importance India attaches to democratic institutions and parliamentary diplomacy. He will also engage with the Indian community in Ethiopia, reinforcing people-centric ties.
Oman Visit to Deepen Strategic Partnership
The final leg of the tour will take Prime Minister Modi to Oman from December 17 to 18, at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. The visit coincides with 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and Oman, making it a landmark moment in bilateral ties.
Discussions during the Oman visit will focus on strengthening the India-Oman Strategic Partnership, particularly in key areas such as energy cooperation, defence and maritime security, trade and investment, renewable energy, and people-to-people exchanges. Oman remains a vital partner for India in the Gulf region, with deep historical, cultural and economic connections.
Strengthening India’s Global Diplomatic Footprint
The three-nation tour underlines India’s proactive foreign policy approach, aimed at deepening strategic partnerships, enhancing South-South cooperation, and strengthening India’s role in regional and global affairs. Officials believe the visit will not only consolidate existing ties but also open new pathways for collaboration across diverse sectors.
