Odisha continues to shiver under an intensifying cold wave as temperatures dipped sharply across several parts of the state over the past few days. Rourkela recorded the lowest temperature at 10.5°C, emerging as the coldest city in Odisha. The steel city has witnessed a drop of nearly six degrees in just six days, marking a significant turn in weather conditions.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dry northerly winds are sweeping across northern and western Odisha, causing a sharp decline in night temperatures. The cold wave is expected to persist for the next few days, extending the chilly spell across the state.
Temperature Dips Across Districts
As per the latest readings, Jharsuguda recorded a minimum temperature of 10.6°C, while Sambalpur and Hirakud registered 14.2°C and 14.8°C, respectively. The capital city Bhubaneswar also felt the winter nip at 15.5°C. Coastal regions, including Gopalpur (17°C) and Balasore (17.1°C), witnessed a noticeable drop in temperatures, indicating the spread of the cold front even to seaside areas.
Residents in western and interior districts have reported dense morning fog, cold winds, and reduced visibility, further adding to the discomfort. Locals have begun layering up, as bonfires and hot beverages become common sights in rural and urban areas alike.
IMD Predicts Further Dip
Meteorologists have forecast that the mercury is likely to fall further in the coming days, signalling the steady arrival of winter across Odisha. “The current trend suggests that the cold wave will intensify as dry winds from the north continue to blow over the region,” a senior IMD official said.
Authorities have advised people, especially the elderly and children, to take precautions during early mornings and late evenings when the chill is most severe.
