Bhubaneswar, October 25: The well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a depression, prompting widespread alerts across coastal and southern Odisha. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system continues to gain strength and could intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.
Cyclone Path Still Unclear
The depression is currently moving west-northwest, though its exact landfall point remains uncertain. While meteorologists suggest the system’s core impact may be felt more in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha is likely to face heavy rainfall, strong winds, and localised thunderstorms.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Bhubaneswar, has placed several districts under alert. On October 27, a yellow warning has been issued for Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Orange Alerts for Heavy Rain
On October 28, orange warnings are in place for Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, and Ganjam, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Similarly, on October 29, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak have been placed under orange alert as the system is expected to move inland.
IMD forecasts also indicate wind speeds between 60–70 kmph in coastal and adjoining districts. Thunderstorm and lightning warnings have been issued for several regions.
Fishermen Warned to Stay Ashore
Authorities have strictly prohibited fishermen from venturing into the sea starting October 26, as rough to very rough sea conditions are expected along the Odisha and Andhra coasts. Those already at sea have been advised to return to the shore immediately.
Precautionary Measures in Place
State disaster management teams have been put on alert, and district administrations have been directed to monitor low-lying and flood-prone areas closely. The weather system is likely to weaken gradually from October 30, with improvement expected as it moves inland.
Officials have urged residents to stay updated with IMD advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall periods.
