Veteran Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, passed away in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. The actor, known for his impeccable comic timing and memorable roles in Hindi cinema, breathed his last around 3:30 p.m. at Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, where he had been admitted four days ago.
His last rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium in the presence of close family members. The family confirmed the news only after the funeral, fulfilling the late actor’s wish for a quiet departure.
“Asrani sahab was admitted due to fluid accumulation in his lungs. He passed away this afternoon. The family wanted to keep things private, as per his wish,” said his personal assistant Babubhai.
A Legendary Career Spanning Five Decades
Born in Jaipur, Asrani was one of Bollywood’s most beloved comic actors, with a career spanning over 50 years and more than 350 films. His versatility allowed him to transition seamlessly between comedy, character roles, and direction.
The 1970s marked his golden era, featuring in classics such as Mere Apne, Koshish, Bawarchi, Parichay, Abhimaan, Chhoti Si Baat, Rafoo Chakkar, and the evergreen Chupke Chupke.
However, his portrayal of the eccentric jail warden in Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 blockbuster “Sholay” remains etched in the collective memory of Indian cinema lovers — a performance that made his “Aadhe idhar jao, aadhe udhar jao” dialogue an iconic pop-culture moment.
Beyond Acting: A Director and Writer
Asrani also made a mark as a writer and director, most notably with the 1977 film Chala Murari Hero Banne, which he wrote, directed, and starred in. He later directed films like Salaam Memsaab (1979) and worked extensively in Gujarati cinema, taking up lead roles and earning wide acclaim during the 1970s and 1980s.
In his later years, Asrani continued to charm audiences with roles in comedy hits such as the Dhamaal franchise, where his performance as actor Ashish Chaudhary’s father was warmly received.
Tributes Pour In
The film industry and fans across generations have expressed deep grief over his passing, remembering him as an artist who brought joy and laughter to millions. A prayer meeting is expected to be held soon.
Asrani’s legacy will forever be remembered for his wit, warmth, and contribution to Indian cinema, standing tall as one of Bollywood’s most endearing comic legends.
