Odisha is likely to experience a significant increase in rainfall from Tuesday, September 23, as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen in the coming days.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Bhubaneswar, a low-pressure area has formed over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining regions.
The system is forecast to move gradually towards the central Bay of Bengal and intensify into a depression on Monday.
However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any forecast at present indicating the formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal.
System Likely To Intensify Into Deep Depression
Weather officials said the system could strengthen further after moving into the central Bay of Bengal.
It is likely to intensify into a deep depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal by Tuesday.
According to the forecast, the system may reach close to the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts by the morning of September 23.
Its movement and intensification are expected to increase rainfall activity across several parts of Odisha.
Heavy Rainfall Expected Till September 25
Rainfall activity in Odisha is expected to increase significantly from September 23 under the influence of the developing weather system.
The IMD has issued weather warnings for 26 districts for the day.
Several areas are likely to experience heavy rainfall, while some locations could receive very heavy rainfall.
The weather system is expected to maintain its influence over Odisha through September 25, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast during the period.
Red Alert Issued For Six Districts
A red warning has been issued for six Odisha districts for the period from September 23 to September 25.
The districts under the red alert are:
- Kandhamal
- Ganjam
- Gajapati
- Kalahandi
- Rayagada
- Puri
Authorities in these districts are expected to remain alert as the weather system approaches the Odisha coast.
Residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas have been advised to follow official weather updates and instructions issued by local administrations.
Fishermen Advised To Return To Coast
With the weather system strengthening over the Bay of Bengal, sea conditions are expected to become rough.
The weather department has therefore advised fishermen currently at sea to return to the coast.
Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea from September 22 to September 24 due to the expected deterioration in marine conditions.
The advisory is aimed at preventing accidents as wind and wave conditions are likely to become increasingly hazardous during the development and movement of the system.
Odisha Weather Under Close Watch
The developing system over the Bay of Bengal is being closely monitored by the meteorological authorities.
While the IMD has not currently forecast cyclone formation, further intensification of the system could lead to worsening weather conditions along the Odisha coast and adjoining districts.
The next few days will be important as the system moves towards the west-central Bay of Bengal and approaches the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coastal region.
People are advised to remain updated through official weather bulletins, particularly in districts under heavy-rainfall warnings.
