New Delhi: The iconic patriotic song ‘Vande Mataram’ will be performed for the first time during the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in New Delhi this year, marking the 150th anniversary of the song.
The Defence Ministry has announced that the rendition will form part of the national flag-hoisting ceremony on Independence Day, adding a special feature to the country’s 80th Independence Day celebrations.
150 Years of ‘Vande Mataram’
Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875, ‘Vande Mataram’ became an important symbol of India’s freedom movement and played a significant role in inspiring patriotic sentiment during the struggle for independence.
To mark 150 years of the song, the government is organising a series of programmes across the country throughout the year.
The third phase of the 150th anniversary celebrations is being held from August 7 to August 15, culminating in the Independence Day celebrations.
‘Yuva Shakti’ to Be Central Theme
This year’s Independence Day celebrations will place particular emphasis on ‘Yuva Shakti’, highlighting the contribution of India’s young population to the country’s development journey.
The theme reflects the government’s focus on the role of young Indians in helping the country achieve its vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The inclusion of ‘Vande Mataram’ at the Red Fort ceremony is expected to give additional significance to the celebrations, particularly as the country marks 150 years of the patriotic composition.
Political Debate Over Legal Protection
The announcement comes amid political discussions surrounding proposed legislative measures concerning ‘Vande Mataram’.
According to the information provided, Parliament has passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to provide legal protection against disrespect to the national song and give it statutory recognition comparable to that associated with the national anthem.
The legislation has also triggered political debate in the Lok Sabha. While the DMK opposed the measure, the BJP argued that the proposed legislation would help uphold respect for the national song.
Historic Rendition at Red Fort
With the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ being commemorated through year-long programmes, its rendition during the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort is expected to become one of the notable features of this year’s national celebrations.
The performance will combine the historic significance of the song with the country’s Independence Day celebrations, while the ‘Yuva Shakti’ theme will focus attention on the role of India’s youth in shaping the nation’s future.
