The Odisha government has announced a comprehensive compensation package for families affected by the recent floods, offering financial assistance for damaged houses, cattle sheds and agricultural losses. The relief package is aimed at helping affected households rebuild their homes, restore farming activities and recover from the devastation caused by widespread flooding across several districts.
The compensation varies based on the extent of damage to residential structures and the nature of agricultural losses, with separate provisions for different categories of houses and crops.
₹1.2 Lakh for Fully Damaged Pucca Houses
Under the housing assistance package, families whose fully damaged pucca (concrete) houses have been destroyed in the floods will receive ₹1,20,000, the highest financial assistance announced under the relief scheme. The amount is intended to support the reconstruction of permanent homes for affected families.
Owners of partially damaged pucca houses will receive ₹6,500 to undertake essential repair works.
For partially damaged kutcha (mud) houses, the government has fixed compensation at ₹4,000, helping families restore basic living conditions.
Meanwhile, households whose thatched houses have been completely destroyed will be provided ₹8,000 to rebuild their homes and arrange temporary shelter.
The government has also extended assistance to livestock owners by announcing ₹3,000 for the repair of damaged cattle sheds, recognising the importance of animal husbandry as a key source of livelihood in rural areas.
Compensation for Crop Losses
In addition to housing assistance, the state government has announced a relief package for farmers who suffered crop losses due to flooding. The compensation has been categorised based on the type of cultivation and irrigation facilities.
Farmers cultivating rain-fed crops will receive ₹8,500 per hectare to compensate for crop damage caused by floodwaters.
For irrigated crops, where cultivation involves higher investment in irrigation systems, seeds and other agricultural inputs, the compensation has been fixed at ₹17,000 per hectare.
The highest agricultural assistance of ₹22,500 per hectare has been announced for farmers growing perennial horticultural crops, including mango, coconut, banana and arecanut (betel nut).
Officials said the enhanced compensation recognises the long-term nature of horticultural plantations, which require several years to mature and resume production after being damaged by natural disasters.
