Bhubaneswar: Odisha is preparing to establish India’s first dedicated rail-tech park, aimed at creating a specialised industrial ecosystem for manufacturers of railway equipment, components and advanced engineering products. The proposed facility will come up at the Sahaspur industrial estate in Khordha district.
The project is expected to strengthen Odisha’s position in the country’s rapidly expanding railway manufacturing sector by bringing major manufacturers, ancillary industries, MSMEs and technology companies together within a common industrial ecosystem.
According to reports, the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) has already carried out preliminary assessments and land development activities for the proposed park. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has also reportedly been prepared.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is expected to formally launch the project soon.
Dedicated Hub for Railway Equipment Manufacturing
The proposed rail-tech park comes at a time when India’s railway sector is undergoing significant modernisation.
The expansion of modern passenger trains, freight corridors, signalling and safety systems and advanced track infrastructure is creating growing demand for specialised railway components and equipment.
The park is expected to provide opportunities for manufacturers involved in products such as:
- Railway wheels and axles
- Coaches and wagons
- Braking systems
- Electrical equipment
- Track components
- Signalling systems
- Safety equipment
- Specialised engineering products
By bringing these industries together, the government hopes to create an integrated supply chain that can serve both domestic railway projects and potential export markets.
₹24,600 Crore Railway Manufacturing Investments Approved
Odisha’s decision to establish the dedicated industrial park follows the state’s success in attracting major investments in railway manufacturing.
The state government has already approved six railway-related manufacturing projects, involving a combined proposed investment of approximately ₹24,600 crore.
The companies associated with these projects include:
- Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel
- Jupiter Wagons Ltd
- Synomac Technology
- Rahee Track Technology
- Amsted Steel Foundaries
- Surlon India
The government is also expecting another six to eight railway-related projects to come up in the state, potentially further expanding the manufacturing ecosystem around the proposed park.
Major Railway Projects Planned in Odisha
Among the significant investments is the proposal by Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel to establish a railway wheelset manufacturing facility with an investment of more than ₹2,500 crore.
Jupiter Wagons has also proposed a rail coach manufacturing facility in Odisha with an estimated investment of around ₹1,500 crore.
Such projects are expected to create demand for a wide range of ancillary suppliers and service providers, strengthening the case for developing a dedicated rail manufacturing cluster.
Cluster-Based Industrial Ecosystem
The rail-tech park is being planned as a cluster-based industrial ecosystem, where companies can access dedicated infrastructure and facilities suited to railway manufacturing.
The proposed cluster is expected to bring together large railway equipment manufacturers, component suppliers, MSMEs, engineering firms and technology companies.
Such proximity could help companies establish integrated supply chains, reduce logistics costs and improve collaboration between manufacturers and suppliers.
The ecosystem could also encourage technology development and innovation in areas such as railway safety, engineering, manufacturing automation and advanced components.
Land and Infrastructure Identified
Industries Department Additional Chief Secretary Hemant Sharma said the land and location for the proposed park had already been identified.
The park will also include infrastructure and facilities specifically designed to meet the requirements of railway component and equipment manufacturers.
The development of specialised industrial infrastructure is expected to make it easier for companies to establish manufacturing facilities while supporting the expansion of existing railway-related investments in Odisha.
Boost to Odisha’s Industrial Ambitions
The proposed rail-tech park could become an important component of Odisha’s broader strategy to attract large-scale manufacturing investments and develop specialised industrial clusters.
With India’s railway modernisation programme generating demand for advanced equipment, Odisha hopes to position itself as a major manufacturing base for railway components and engineering products.
