Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to witness cloudburst-like rainfall on Monday as a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal intensifies into a deep depression, triggering widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the ongoing weather system could lead to flash flood-like conditions in 27 districts, prompting the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) to place all district administrations on high alert.
According to the IMD, the active weather system is expected to influence Odisha’s weather until July 29, with continuous rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds likely in several regions.
Depression Likely to Cross Odisha–West Bengal Coast
The depression developed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Odisha–West Bengal coast on Sunday and is expected to strengthen into a deep depression.
As of 11:30 pm on Sunday, the system was located:
- Around 60 km south of Sagar Island (West Bengal)
- 80 km southeast of Digha
- 150 km east-northeast of Chandbali (Odisha)
- 140 km east-southeast of Balasore
The IMD has forecast that the system will cross the coast between Paradip and Sagar Island around noon on Monday.
Red Alert for Three Districts
The IMD has issued a Red Warning for:
- Sundargarh
- Keonjhar
- Mayurbhanj
These districts are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall, with the possibility of localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruption to normal life.
Additionally, a Yellow Warning has been issued for 12 other districts, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely during the day.
Flash Flood Risk Across Odisha
With intense rainfall expected over a short duration, authorities have warned of:
- Flash flood-like situations
- Urban waterlogging
- Overflowing rivers and streams
- Landslides in vulnerable hilly regions
- Traffic disruptions and reduced visibility
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has directed all district collectors to remain fully prepared for any emergency and ensure rapid response measures are in place.
Schools and Anganwadi Centres Closed
As a precautionary measure, district administrations have ordered the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres on Monday in:
- Jagatsinghpur
- Kendrapara
- Mayurbhanj
The move aims to ensure the safety of children amid the forecast of intense rainfall.
Fishermen Asked to Stay Ashore
Sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough under the influence of the depression.
Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until July 29, warning of strong winds, high waves, and hazardous marine conditions.
Residents, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, have been urged to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and closely follow official weather advisories.
