Rain Eases Across Odisha as Depression Weakens; Heavy Rain Alert Only for Two Districts

After several days of relentless rainfall triggered by a depression over central India, weather conditions have begun improving across Odisha. The intensity of rainfall has reduced significantly in most parts of the state, bringing relief to residents after a prolonged spell of heavy showers that affected normal life and prompted weather warnings in multiple districts.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression responsible for the widespread rain has moved away from Odisha and is currently centred over parts of north Chhattisgarh, southeast Uttar Pradesh, and northwest Madhya Pradesh. The weather system is expected to continue moving in a west-northwest direction over the next 12 hours before gradually weakening into a low-pressure area.

With the depression shifting away from the state, the IMD has ruled out any widespread heavy rainfall across Odisha. However, isolated heavy showers are still likely in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts, prompting the weather department to issue a Yellow Warning for these areas. Residents in the two districts have been advised to remain cautious as localised heavy rainfall may continue for a brief period.

For the rest of Odisha, rainfall activity is expected to decline considerably. The easing of the monsoon system is likely to improve conditions in areas that witnessed waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and flooding over the past few days due to continuous rain.

Apart from rainfall, the IMD has also forecast gusty surface winds with speeds ranging between 35 kmph and 45 kmph over parts of north coastal Odisha. People living in vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions against strong winds.

The weather department has further cautioned that isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may still occur in some pockets of the state despite the overall improvement in weather conditions. Citizens are advised to follow official weather advisories and avoid taking shelter under trees or venturing into open areas during thunderstorms.

As the depression weakens further and moves away from the region, day temperatures across Odisha are expected to rise gradually over the coming days. The return of relatively dry weather is likely to bring normalcy across the state, although authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather situation closely.

The latest forecast comes as a welcome relief for Odisha, which experienced days of heavy rainfall under the influence of the depression, leading to school closures, waterlogging, and disruptions to transport and daily activities in several districts.
