Monsoon Likely to Enter Odisha in 2-3 Days; Orange Alert for 11 Districts

Odisha is likely to witness an increase in pre-monsoon rainfall activity over the coming days, with the southwest monsoon expected to enter the state within the next two to three days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Meteorologists said atmospheric conditions have become increasingly favourable for the monsoon’s advancement as moisture-laden winds and cloud bands from the Bay of Bengal continue moving towards the Odisha coast. Several districts have already been experiencing intermittent rain, thunderstorms and cloudy conditions over the past few days.

Monsoon Conditions Becoming Favourable

The IMD stated that enhanced moisture flow and stronger cloud formation over the Bay of Bengal have created ideal conditions for the monsoon to advance further into eastern India.

While rainfall activity has increased across many parts of the state, weather experts clarified that the ongoing showers are part of pre-monsoon activity and should not be considered the official onset of the southwest monsoon.

Once the monsoon formally arrives, Odisha is expected to receive more widespread, sustained and organised rainfall, providing much-needed relief from the prevailing heat and humidity.

Humid Conditions Continue

Despite recent rainfall, residents across several districts continue to experience uncomfortable weather conditions due to high humidity levels.

The influx of moisture-bearing winds has led to sticky and humid conditions, particularly in coastal and adjoining districts. Daytime temperatures remain relatively high, while moisture in the atmosphere is making conditions feel warmer than the actual temperature.

Kalbaisakhi Activity Remains Active

The state continues to experience Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) activity, with many districts witnessing a combination of hot weather during the day followed by thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and rain during the afternoon and evening hours.

According to the IMD, this weather pattern is likely to continue over the next few days as atmospheric instability remains active across the region.

Orange Warning for 11 Districts

In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning for 11 districts, forecasting:

  • Thunderstorms
  • Lightning
  • Gusty surface winds
  • Moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated areas

Additionally, a Yellow Warning has been issued for 19 districts, indicating the possibility of adverse weather conditions and urging residents to remain vigilant.

Advisory for Residents

The weather department has advised people to:

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning activity
  • Avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles
  • Secure loose outdoor objects due to strong winds
  • Follow official weather updates and advisories
  • Exercise caution while travelling during adverse weather conditions

With pre-monsoon showers becoming more frequent and atmospheric conditions steadily improving, Odisha appears set to welcome the southwest monsoon soon, marking the beginning of the state’s primary rainy season and bringing much-needed relief from the prolonged summer heat.
