Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to experience an extended spell of pre-monsoon weather activity over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several districts. Orange and Yellow warnings have been issued for different parts of the state as weather systems remain active ahead of the southwest monsoon’s arrival.
While the rain is expected to provide temporary relief from soaring temperatures in many regions, coastal districts are likely to continue facing hot and humid conditions.
June 2: Orange Alert for Nine Districts as Thunderstorms Intensify
On June 2, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are expected at isolated places across Odisha. The most severe weather activity is likely over northern, western and southern interior districts.
An Orange Alert has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Gajapati, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph are likely during the afternoon and evening hours.
A Yellow Warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Bargarh, Deogarh, Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh, where wind speeds may reach 40-50 kmph.
Districts including Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir and Nabarangpur may witness thunderstorms with winds of 30-40 kmph.
June 3: Storm Activity Shifts Towards Northern and Coastal Odisha
The thunderstorm belt is expected to move towards northern and coastal Odisha on June 3. Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are likely in several northern, coastal and southern districts, while dry weather may prevail elsewhere.
Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj remain under Orange Alert, with the possibility of strong thunderstorms and winds reaching 50-60 kmph.
A Yellow Warning continues for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.
Despite the rainfall activity, coastal districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Puri and Khordha are expected to continue experiencing hot and humid weather conditions.
June 4: Orange Alert Withdrawn, But Thunderstorm Risk Remains
Weather conditions are expected to remain similar on June 4, although the overall intensity of thunderstorms is likely to decrease.
The Orange Alert has been withdrawn, but Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj remain under a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.
Several districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh, may experience winds of 30-40 kmph.
Humidity levels are expected to remain high across coastal Odisha.
June 5: Rain and Lightning Continue Across Northern and Coastal Districts
Thunderstorm activity is likely to persist across northern, coastal and southern Odisha on June 5.
Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.
Among these districts, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj are likely to remain the most vulnerable, with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, while other districts may experience winds of 30-40 kmph accompanied by lightning.
June 6: Thunderstorm Activity Shifts to Western and Southern Odisha
By June 6, weather activity is expected to concentrate mainly over western and southern Odisha.
Districts likely to receive rainfall include Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
A Yellow Warning has been issued for Koraput and Malkangiri, where thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are likely.
Other western districts may witness lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph.
Meanwhile, coastal districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh are expected to remain hot and humid despite a reduction in rainfall activity.
Residents Advised to Remain Vigilant
Weather officials have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms, stay away from trees and electric poles, and follow local weather advisories. Farmers, fishermen and residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to take necessary precautions against lightning strikes, strong winds and sudden weather changes.
With the southwest monsoon approaching eastern India, Odisha is expected to continue witnessing active pre-monsoon weather conditions over the coming days.
