A devastating fire in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area claimed at least 21 lives on Wednesday, making it one of the deadliest fire incidents in the national capital in recent years. The blaze reportedly broke out in a restaurant operating on the ground floor of a multi-storey building that also housed a hotel, trapping several occupants inside.
According to officials, emergency response teams, including the Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and ambulance services, rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. Rescue operations were launched immediately, with firefighters battling intense flames and thick smoke to evacuate those trapped inside. More than 35 people were rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Jitendra Kumar, SDM and DDMA official for South Delhi, said authorities activated the disaster response mechanism as soon as the alert was received. Preliminary information suggests that a restaurant was operating on the ground floor, though the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as several people attempted to escape from upper floors, with local residents placing mattresses on the road to help those forced to jump from the building.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed grief over the loss of lives and assured that all necessary medical assistance and support were being provided to affected families. She said multiple emergency agencies were mobilized immediately after the incident to carry out rescue and relief operations.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Sandhu also conveyed condolences and directed officials to ensure prompt medical care, relief measures, and a thorough investigation into the tragedy. Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge urged authorities to provide adequate compensation and medical support to victims and their families.
Officials said the fire spread rapidly through the building, with dense smoke making rescue efforts challenging. Preliminary reports indicate that the affected property may have had serious fire safety deficiencies, and authorities are examining whether all required permissions and safety norms were in place. Investigators are expected to assess the cause of the blaze and determine whether negligence contributed to the high casualty count.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over fire safety compliance in commercial establishments and lodging facilities, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Authorities have assured that a detailed probe will be conducted and appropriate action taken against those found responsible.
