Centre Issues Heatwave Advisory As Extreme Temperatures Grip Several Parts Of India

Amid rising temperatures and severe heatwave conditions across several regions of the country, the Ministry of Ayush, in coordination with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has issued a comprehensive public health advisory to help citizens protect themselves from heat-related illnesses during the ongoing summer season.

The advisory outlines preventive measures for the general public, vulnerable groups, employers, outdoor workers and organisers of public gatherings, stressing the importance of hydration, heat protection and early medical intervention during extreme weather conditions.

Citizens Advised To Stay Hydrated And Avoid Peak Sun Exposure

According to the advisory, people have been urged to:

  • Drink adequate water and electrolyte-rich fluids regularly
  • Avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak afternoon hours
  • Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothing
  • Consume seasonal fruits and cooling foods
  • Monitor weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD)

The Ministry also recommended avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during periods of intense heat and maintaining proper ventilation indoors.

Vulnerable Groups Asked To Take Extra Precautions

The advisory highlighted that infants, children, elderly persons, pregnant women, outdoor labourers and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as hypertension and heart disease are particularly vulnerable to heat-related complications.

Health authorities advised close monitoring and preventive care for these groups, as prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures may lead to dehydration, exhaustion and heatstroke.

Heatstroke Identified As Medical Emergency

The advisory warned citizens to remain alert for symptoms of heat stress and heat-related illness, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Severe headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • High body temperature
  • Fainting or seizures
  • Dehydration
  • Altered mental status or confusion

Officials stressed that heatstroke is a serious medical emergency and advised immediate medical assistance in severe cases through emergency helplines 108 and 102.

Guidelines Issued For Workplaces And Public Gatherings

The government also issued preventive recommendations for workplaces, outdoor events, sports activities and public gatherings.

Authorities advised organisers and employers to ensure:

  • Availability of shaded rest areas
  • Regular hydration breaks for workers
  • Heat acclimatisation measures
  • Public awareness regarding symptoms of heat stress

The advisory noted that proper planning and precautionary arrangements could significantly reduce health risks during prolonged heatwave conditions.

Traditional Ayush Systems Included In Advisory

In addition to conventional health measures, the Ministry incorporated guidance from traditional wellness systems under Ayush, including Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga, Unani and Homoeopathy.

  • Gentle yoga routines
  • Cooling refreshments

were suggested to help maintain thermal comfort and improve overall well-being during high temperatures.

Unani And Homoeopathy Measures Included

The Unani system advised the use of traditional cooling drinks and herbal applications to prevent dehydration and sunburn, while Homoeopathy recommendations focused on precautionary care and minimising exposure during peak heat hours.
