A sensational unbeaten knock from Tilak Varma guided Mumbai Indians to a six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings in their IPL 2026 clash in Dharamshala on Friday.
Tilak remained unbeaten on 75 off just 33 balls as Mumbai successfully chased down the 201-run target, while Punjab Kings slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat of the season.
Tilak Anchors Mumbai’s Chase
After the early dismissal of Ryan Rickelton, Tilak Varma steadied the innings and accelerated brilliantly in the middle overs to take Mumbai home comfortably.
Rickelton narrowly missed out on a half-century, scoring 48 off 23 balls before being dismissed by Azmatullah Omarzai in the seventh over.
Veteran opener Rohit Sharma struggled to find rhythm during his 25-run knock off 26 deliveries before losing his wicket to Yuzvendra Chahal in the 10th over.
Tilak then stitched crucial partnerships with Sherfane Rutherford (20) and Will Jacks, who remained unbeaten on 25, to seal the chase for Mumbai Indians.
PBKS Recover After Middle-Order Collapse
Earlier, Punjab Kings posted 200/8 in their 20 overs after recovering from a dramatic middle-order collapse.
Prabhsimran Singh top-scored with 57 and brought up his half-century in the 11th over. He shared a solid opening stand with Priyansh Arya, who scored 22 off 17 balls before being dismissed by Deepak Chahar.
However, PBKS lost momentum in the middle overs after a brilliant spell from Shardul Thakur.
Thakur struck twice in the 12th over, removing Prabhsimran Singh and skipper Shreyas Iyer cheaply to put Punjab under pressure.
He later dismissed Suryansh Shedge and Marco Jansen to complete a superb four-wicket haul.
Corbin Bosch also contributed with the wicket of Shashank Singh as Punjab’s batting lineup crumbled late in the innings.
Despite the collapse, late fireworks from Azmatullah Omarzai, who smashed 38 off just 17 balls, along with unbeaten cameos from Xavier Bartlett (18*) and Vishnu Vinod (15*), helped Punjab cross the 200-run mark.
MI Continue Strong Momentum
Mumbai Indians skipper Jasprit Bumrah had earlier won the toss and opted to bowl first in Dharamshala.
With the win, Mumbai Indians strengthened their position in the IPL 2026 points table, while Punjab Kings’ playoff hopes suffered another major setback.
