Thunderstorms, Lightning And Gusty Winds To Lash Odisha For 5 Days; Orange Warning Issued For Mayurbhanj

The weather department has forecast an extended spell of rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several districts of Odisha over the next five days, with an Orange Warning issued for Mayurbhanj due to the likelihood of intense thunderstorm activity and strong winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph.

According to the latest forecast valid till 8:30 AM on May 12, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are very likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts. The remaining districts are likely to witness mainly dry weather conditions.

Orange Warning For Mayurbhanj

The weather office has issued an Orange Warning for Mayurbhanj district, cautioning residents about thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 50-60 kmph during afternoon and evening hours.

Authorities have advised people in vulnerable areas to remain alert and avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during periods of intense weather activity.

Yellow Warning For Multiple Districts

A Yellow Warning has also been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts.

These districts are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Rainfall Activity To Continue Till May 16

For Day 2, valid from May 12 to May 13, rainfall and thunderstorm activity is expected to continue over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts.

The weather department has maintained a Yellow Warning for these districts, forecasting lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.

Thunderstorm Activity To Shift Towards Interior Odisha

From May 13 to May 14, thunderstorm activity is likely to become more concentrated over northern and southern interior Odisha.

Districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Koraput are likely to receive light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, while most other districts may witness dry weather.

A Yellow Warning remains in effect for these areas due to the possibility of lightning and gusty winds.

Southern And Interior Districts To Remain Under Impact

Between May 14 and May 16, districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi and Kandhamal are likely to continue experiencing rain and thunderstorm activity.

The department has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds reaching 40-50 kmph during afternoon and evening hours.

Advisory Issued For Residents

The weather department has urged residents in vulnerable districts to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity. People have been advised to avoid open spaces during lightning strikes, stay away from trees and electric poles, and take necessary precautions against strong winds.

Officials stated that thunderstorm intensity is expected to peak during afternoon and evening hours over the coming days.
