Bhubaneswar: Relentless heat and rising humidity have made life increasingly difficult across Odisha, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in several districts and hot, dry winds compounding discomfort during peak hours.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a brief spell of relief may be on the horizon, with Kalbaisakhi thunderstorms likely later in the day. While short-lived, these pre-monsoon showers are expected to bring temporary respite from the scorching conditions.
Yellow Warning for Coastal Districts
The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for 11 coastal districts, cautioning residents about persistent hot and humid weather. Additionally, 13 districts have been placed under alert for thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds.
Authorities have advised people to limit outdoor exposure, particularly during the afternoon, and to stay hydrated as heat stress levels rise.
Temperatures Continue to Surge
Despite the forecast of thunderstorms, officials warn that temperatures are likely to rise further from Friday, prolonging the heatwave spell.
On Thursday, Titlagarh recorded the highest temperature in the state at 43.7°C, followed closely by Jharsuguda at 43.6°C.
Multiple Areas Under Severe Heat
Several regions reported extreme temperatures:
- Hirakud, Sambalpur, Bhawanipatna, and Balangir crossed 42°C
- Nuapada, Rourkela, and Sundargarh remained above 41°C
Overall, at least 14 locations across the state recorded temperatures above 40°C, highlighting the widespread intensity of the heatwave.
Challenging Days Ahead
With only brief spells of rain expected and humidity levels remaining high, residents across Odisha are bracing for continued discomfort in the coming days.
Officials continue to urge precautionary measures, especially for vulnerable groups, as the state navigates one of the most intense heat spells of the season.
