IMD Issues 5-Day Thunderstorm Alert for Odisha; Orange Warning for Mayurbhanj

The India Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather alert for Odisha, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and gusty winds across multiple districts. An Orange Warning has been sounded for Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday, indicating the likelihood of severe weather conditions.

Day 1: Orange Warning in Mayurbhanj

According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across coastal, northern, and interior parts of Odisha.

Districts likely to receive rainfall include Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Keonjhar, Angul, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi, among others.

  • Mayurbhanj may witness thunderstorms with lightning, hail, and winds of 50–60 kmph.

  • Keonjhar, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, and Puri are likely to experience winds of 40–50 kmph.

  • A Yellow Warning has been issued for several districts including Jajpur, Kendrapara, and Nayagarh, with winds of 30–40 kmph expected.

Day 2: Rain in Northern and Southern Regions

Between March 17 and 18, rainfall and thunderstorms are likely in districts such as Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Gajapati, while other areas may remain relatively dry.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for parts of northern and southern Odisha.

Day 3: Continued Thunderstorm Activity

From March 18 to 19, isolated rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to continue in districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Rayagada, and Koraput.

IMD has maintained a Yellow Warning due to lightning and gusty winds risks.

Day 4: Weather Activity Shifts to Southern Odisha

Between March 19 and 20, rainfall activity will be largely confined to southern districts such as Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi.

  • Winds of 30–40 kmph are likely in isolated areas under a Yellow Warning.

Day 5: Rainfall Activity Expands Again

From March 20 to 21, rainfall is expected to intensify and spread across the state once again, covering both coastal and interior districts, including Sundargarh, Boudh, Nuapada, and Balangir.

A Yellow Warning has been issued for several districts, including Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar.

Advisory for Residents

The IMD has urged residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms:

  • Avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning

  • Secure loose objects to prevent damage from strong winds

  • Stay updated with official weather alerts

Authorities have advised people, especially in vulnerable areas, to stay alert and follow safety precautions as the state braces for changing weather conditions over the coming days.
