A recent social media post by industrialist Anand Mahindra has brought fresh attention to Duduma Falls, a stunning yet relatively lesser-known waterfall in Koraput district of Odisha.
In his post on X, the Mahindra Group chairman highlighted that while Odisha is widely recognised for its temples, beaches and cultural heritage, it also boasts spectacular natural landscapes that remain largely unexplored. He described Duduma Falls as a dramatic cascade where the Machkund River plunges down a rocky cliff amid dense forests, showcasing the country’s rich natural beauty.
Among Eastern India’s Tallest Waterfalls
Duduma Falls is considered one of the tallest waterfalls in eastern India, with water dropping from a height of about 157 metres (515 feet). Located along the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh border, the waterfall originates from the Machkund River and descends into a deep gorge surrounded by lush greenery.
Also known locally as Matsya Tirtha, the site is enveloped by thick forests and rugged terrain, offering breathtaking panoramic views. During the monsoon season, the waterfall is at its most powerful, with roaring waters visible and audible from a distance.
Best Time To Visit
The ideal time to visit Duduma Falls is between October and February, when the weather is pleasant and the post-monsoon flow enhances its scenic beauty. While the July–September monsoon period makes the waterfall more dramatic, heavy rains can make travel difficult. Summers, on the other hand, tend to be hot in the region.
Connectivity And Access
Duduma Falls is accessible through multiple routes:
-
Nearest airport: Visakhapatnam
-
Nearest railway station: Koraput
-
Well-connected road routes from both Koraput and Visakhapatnam, offering scenic drives through hills and forests
Attractions Around Duduma Falls
Visitors can explore several viewpoints around the falls that provide safe and stunning perspectives of the cascade. The nearby Machkund Hydroelectric Project—one of the oldest hydroelectric plants in the region—is another key attraction.
The broader Koraput region is also known for its rich tribal culture, with nearby villages and local markets offering a glimpse into traditional lifestyles. The surrounding forests provide opportunities for nature walks, photography, and peaceful exploration.
A Hidden Gem Gaining Recognition
Unlike many crowded tourist destinations, Duduma Falls has largely retained its untouched and serene charm. With its towering cliffs, dense greenery and tranquil environment, it offers an ideal retreat for nature lovers.
Now, with Anand Mahindra’s viral endorsement, this hidden gem is drawing renewed interest from travellers and tourism enthusiasts, potentially placing it on the map as one of Odisha’s must-visit natural attractions.
